Overlap House has been shortlisted for a Scottish Design Award in the Low-Cost Project Schemes under £250k category.

This project takes a typical 1930s bungalow in Edinburgh and with careful shifts, pulls and adjustments the building becomes a series of unfolding, overlapping spaces that become greater than the sum of their parts.

To be recognised alongside our peers and to see the variety and quality of design and architecture in Scotland on display is a real joy.

Each project starts with looking and listening.

These diagrams show the initial analysis for a new home in North Berwick, recently granted planning permission. They are part of an early process of understanding the character of a place and testing what it might become.

Before ideas take shape, we spend time observing what is already there. Through careful observation, connections begin to emerge and a direction for the project slowly reveals itself.

We had a great afternoon joining SF Structures Scotland Ltd for a site visit at their Princes Street project, taking in huge historic beams, wonky floors and magnificent views. We then headed over the road to the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) for our Generation Exhibition before finishing with drinks and a curry. Great company and brilliant collaboration.

It’s wonderful to see our Portobello project featured in this month’s magazine.

This listed Georgian home has been carefully refurbished and reconfigured into a warm and welcoming family space, brought to life with a delightful soft palette and joyful finishes by of Studio Mac Interior Designers. The kitchen was beautifully crafted by , with building works thoughtfully delivered and coordinated by .

We are now excited to be continuing our collaboration with the team on the Beach Bothy, a garden retreat designed to enhance and re-energise the outdoor space, with works commencing on site later this spring.

We had a fantastic weekend welcoming some of our past and current clients to our Generation Exhibition at the RSA. Despite the dreich weather, it was wonderful to reflect on past projects, celebrate our amazing clients, and raise a glass together afterwards. Delighted to be exhibiting as part of the Generation Exhibition, opening tomorrow at the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture in Edinburgh.
The exhibition explores architectural lineage, showcasing the work of sixteen architects who developed their careers after working at Richard Murphy Architects. It examines the idea of an “architectural family tree,” considering how ideas are passed on through practice and mentorship.
With Craig Amy, Tina Bergman, Andrew Brown, Kris Grant, Peter Guthrie, Ed Hollis, Klas Hyllén, Gareth Jones, Martin Lambie, Matt Loader, Daryl Philip Robbins, Stewart Stevenson, Brian Tobin, William Tunnell, and Jordi Sanahuja Vidal.
The exhibition runs from 24 January to 8 March in the Finlay Room (Lower Galleries) as part of the RSA’s bicentenary celebrations. Entry is free, so please pop by next time you’re in town!
