Amongst the many interesting artistic offerings at this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a joint show featuring Japanese glass artist Keiko Mukaide on Howe Street: https://www.craftscotland.org/whats-on/event/mach-and-mukaide-art-exhibition-480. See also: Mach and Mukaide

Keiko created permanent lit glass works for us at both the The Hub - Edinburgh's Festival Centre and the Queen's Gallery, Edinburgh for the Royal Collection Trust, both buildings which are worth a visit at any time of the year, but particularly during the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Edinburgh from a Bus in 1959 - Corner of George IV Bridge and Chambers Street

Ally recalls, "That block on the left has been gone a very long time. I don't actually remember it at all, though it must have been there when I was a child. It's now the site of the new Museum."

Here is Steve Wood from David Narro Associates, the Consulting Structural Engineer on the Boyne Pier repair project at Cove Harbour, explaining how the pier has been affected over time; much like this popular piece of confectionery!

Temporarily re-opened for one week 25 years after last closing its doors, the wonderful art deco Leith Theatre and its rabbit warren of backstage spaces is a fabulous venue for another packed programme of events for Hidden Door Festival 2017. We recommend checking it out before it finishes on Sunday, 4th June.

A gift to the people of Leith from the people of Edinburgh on the amalgamation of the two cities in 1920, find out more about the building's colourful history and hopeful future via the Leith Theatre Trust.

Number 14: Bronze bust of Sir Patrick Geddes by Kenny Hunter, 2012
Just one of Edinburgh’s 101 Objects

In celebration of 2017 being the year of 'History, Heritage and Archaeology', a bespoke website has been filled with 101 Objects highlighting Edinburgh’s most intriguing treasures. It is 70 years since the city exploded with arts festivals and 250 years since Edinburgh decided to expand with a plan for a New Town.

From the prestigious to the prosaic, each object has a glittering tale to tell. Viewers can sift through the stories online, then visit the objects in person at locations across the city, exploring the city’s great wealth of history. To assist rifling through such a vast trove, the items have been sorted into themes, like ‘City of Innovation’, ‘Arts and Performance’, ‘Everyday Living’ and ‘On the Dark Side’.

Patrick Geddes, a visionary and town planner, is close to our heart as, amongst other important contributions, he initiated improvement of living conditions in the Old Town. For this project, he is represented by a bust by Kenny Hunter located in the garden behind the Scottish Book Trust on Trunk's Close off 55 High Street.

It is nice to be reminded of all the different boats that Ben steers, not just our office. In his most recent 'SMWS Unfiltered' interview, he discusses his experiences of being a founding member of the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, as well as talking about his Harbour Master duties at Cove.

To read the full tale (p14), along with an interview with our good friend and neighbour, Paul Walker from Walker Slater (p28), see here:
