The new space can be used all year round. The new patio doors can slide away to allow seamless connection between inside and the newly remodelled garden. The roof spans out over the glazing to shelter the garden room from summer sunshine and provide shelter on days when the weather is less than perfect.

A modern garden room to a suburban house in Balerno, Edinburgh

This modern garden room transformed a Victorian villa in Trinity, Edinburgh. The house now has a proper kitchen / dining space and a cosy living room, both connected to the garden by a sheltered deck. The original layout almost ignored the large rear garden but the new design has become the center of family life. The exterior is clad in Scottish Larch and the new zinc roof is supported by exposed Douglas Fir beams, which add warmth and detail to the interior.

This bright, modern extension is in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. The client needed a new kitchen / living space that connected directly with their rear garden. Creating such a deep plan meant natural light was a major concern. The new zinc roof is designed to face south and has three large bespoke skylights. The roof structure is supported by exposed Douglas Firr beams. These have a warm, natural tone which matches the Siberian larch cladding used outside, on the sheltered rear deck.

It's been a busy few months. I have a lot of projects on the drawing board, some under construction and others coming to completion, including renovation projects, internal alterations and house extensions.

Falkland resident Níall Hedderman is an architect with over 15 years experience altering and extending private homes across Edinburgh and Fife. Níall is fundraising for the club by offering an “ask the architect” service during junior training sessions on Friday nights.

Whether you are thinking of building a new home, extending your current house or just changing its layout, make a small donation to the club and get expert advice. If possible, bring photos of your property on your phone.

Níall will be available for the full duration of the training session in the clubhouse , just walk up and say hello.

For an initial 15 minute chat Niall is asking that a £15 donation is made to the club and if necessary he will follow up with a home visit at no extra charge.

Just got building warrant, planning and listed building consent to change a window into a juliet balcony at the rear of this property in Falkland, Fife. I’ve lived in Falkland village for 12 years and really enjoy doing work locally. The property is in the very first conservation area in Scotland, and the window is on the first floor, so both the planning system and building regulations have a lot to say when doing work like this.

This 200 year old country house in Fife was in a sad state back in 2014. The client didn’t have the budget to do everything they wanted, so I worked with them to prioritise the remedial work. The end result is impressive and this beautiful old house will still be standing in another two centuries.
