We are beginning a small in-store garden. Starting small with some baby spiders, these have been potted in soil and fabric pots

Fabric pots are a spectacular solution to many problems posed by plastic.

A black plastic pot is like an oven under strong lighting or sun rays, baking the roots in their soil. With a breathable wall, air can move into the medium and cool it as well as oxygenating it. Breathability also helps avoid over watering!

Other issues occur with the root zone, when a root reaches the wall of a plastic pot it curls back on itself in an attempt to move round the obstacle. This leads to wasted space and a dense net of roots around the edge where the least nutrients can be found.

When a root instead reaches the aerated edge next to the wall of the cloth pot, the plant assumes it has reached the surface and simply ends the growth of that root, saving energy and collecting more nutrition.

Not to mention the environmental impact of microplastics on the environment and on your plant!
