Plant Quarter is an innovative indoor plant subscription service launched by a first-year university student. After moving into university accommodation, he found it challenging to cope with the absence of greenery in his small apartment. Working at a local garden centre inspired him to bring a plant home, and as friends began asking for plants and advice on how to keep them thriving, Plant Quarter was born. Their mission is to make it easy, affordable, and beginner-friendly to introduce the beauty of nature into your home or living space.

Established in 2009 by Steve & Abi Evans, our Surrey Nursery spans an 18-acre area, serving as both a plant nursery and landscape supply hub. We cater to both trade and retail customers, taking pride in cultivating around 80% of our plants on-site, ensuring their resilience without artificial heat. Recently, we had the opportunity to discuss growing methods and the transition to peat-free practices with Nick Westmarland, The Otter Nursery, Ottershaw Nursery Manager.

With 15 years of experience as the Nursery Manager at The Otter Nursery and a total of 34 years in horticulture, Nick has been at the forefront of innovative growing methods. A significant portion of our inventory is grown using polythene, glass, and outdoor beds. This year, our nursery has excelled in expanding shrubs and herbaceous plants like Coprosma Lemon and Lime, Coprosma Pacific Dawn, Hydrangea Hot Chocolate, Hydrangea Miss Saori, Spiraea Pink Ice, and Spiraea Shirobana. We are also venturing into new herbaceous plants such as Heuchera Gotham, Sweet Caroline, Peach Crisp, and various Cordyline varieties.

The horticultural sector is experiencing a notable shift towards peat-free growing mediums. We now provide peat-free compost to customers and have reduced peat usage in our substrates by 70%. Embracing peat-free alternatives offers benefits like reduced carbon emissions, preservation of peat bogs and wildlife habitats, and addressing climate change. While transitioning to peat-free presents challenges such as water level management, we are adapting to these changes well.

This month, we are initiating two new trials at Otter, one involving peat-free compost and the other utilising new cell plug plants. These small plants in 84-cell trays are efficient for rapid plant turnover, especially advantageous in herbaceous production, proving useful and cost-effective for growers.

Nick is always ready to provide guidance to our customers regarding plant species and growing methods.

15/05/2024

During Mental Health Foundation Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to emphasise the support provided by Kingston Landscape Group for all employees' mental well-being. Here are the resources available to assist with various challenges:

Support Services Offered:

Benenden Healthcare: Employees have access to a 24/7 Mental Healthcare helpline, quick GP consultations, and physiotherapy sessions. Long-term mental health conditions can benefit from a six-week CBT therapy session, either in person or online.

Perennial - Gardeners' Royal Benevolent Society Partnership: As a Platinum Perennial Partner, tailored support is available for individual cases through the only UK charity dedicated to supporting those in horticulture. They provide a 24-hour mental health helpline and financial tools for budgeting advice.

In-House Support: A full-time Mental Health Advisor is on hand for employees to talk to at any time. Various activities are offered to help employees assess and improve their mental health.

Additional Tips to Support Mental Health:

Exercise: Engaging in physical activity, even a 20-minute walk daily, can significantly benefit mental health. Some employees have adjusted working hours to accommodate exercise routines like walks, gym visits, or runs.

Healthy Habits: Maintaining proper hydration and healthy eating habits is crucial for physical and mental well-being.

Communication: Reach out to friends, partners, or colleagues when feeling anxious or worried for reassurance or guidance towards support.

Personal Time: Make time for activities you enjoy. Kingston Landscape Group provides free courses encompassing hobby crafts and educational pursuits.

This year's theme for Mental Health Week is Movement, which we are embracing at KLG by engaging in Milestone May for Perennial. Thus far, we have raised over ÂŁ1000 and collectively walked around 500 miles. Apart from the funds raised, a significant achievement has been motivating our staff to take walks during the workday. Whether alone for some quiet time or with colleagues for a chat, encouraging movement has been invaluable. If you wish to support our team and Perennial, you can donate here https://lnkd.in/ezzRBfgj
