I’m delighted to share that MFA Home Design has been shortlisted for the 2026 British Institute of Interior Design Awards in the Scotland & Northern Ireland Commercial interior design category.

The shortlisted project, Holborn Workplace in Aberdeen, is a project very close to my heart and reflects my belief that thoughtful commercial interiors should support wellbeing, clarity and calm.

To have this work recognised by the British Institute of Interior Design truly means so much. As a small studio, this is a very meaningful milestone, and I’m incredibly grateful.

My sincere thanks to for this recognition, to my client for their trust and to everyone who helped bring the project to life.

A special thanks to for capturing the project so beautifully.

The feeling of a room matters more than ever.

People are becoming more aware of how much their environment affects the way they feel, and are looking for homes that help them feel calmer within themselves.

Softer light.
Gentle movement.
Natural textures.
And a quieter atmosphere that feels easy to be in.

The most luxurious rooms often are not the loudest, but the ones that make you instantly relax the moment you walk in.

A home lasts when it stops asking to be changed.

Most people don’t want to keep rethinking their space. They want to make the right decisions once, and then simply live in it, without second guessing.

I often speak to people who have already made updates, but something still doesn’t quite feel right.

The layout is slightly awkward.
Lighting doesn’t quite work.
Materials didn’t wear as expected.
The overall feel never quite settled, and overtime, changes start happening.
Not because they want to keep updating, but because it was never fully resolved.

Design that lasts comes from how carefully decisions are made from the start:

- A layout that works naturally, without effort
- Proportions that feel balanced, not forced
- Light that is layered, not just coming from above
- Materials that wear well, rather than needing constant upkeep
- And a level of restraint, so the space feels settled over time

When those elements are clear, the space doesn’t need revisiting.
It simple continues to work.

If you are at the stage of wanting to make those decisions right, I’m always open to a conversation.

This room wasn’t working.

It was meant to be a meeting space.
But in reality, it became somewhere people avoided.

The layout didn’t support how the team actually worked.
The furniture limited flexibility.
And the space felt cluttered rather than useful.

So it was rethought entirely.

Within the same footprint, the space was restructured to support:
– focused work
– collaboration
– and flexible hot-desking

Lighting was softened.
Natural elements were introduced.
And the layout was resolved properly.

Now, it’s a space that adapts throughout the day and gets used.

Because a well-designed space isn’t defined by how it looks.
It’s defined by whether it works.

This is what people feel, but don’t see.

Most of what shapes a space isn’t immediately visible.

It sits in the balance of light,
the restraint in what is included,
and the quiet details that don’t compete for attention.

These are the decisions that take the most time, but they are what allow a space to feel calm and remain that way over time.

You might recognise this kind of space.

This is the finished room.
Calm, balanced, and resolved.

But it didn’t start this way.

The layout already worked.
Everything was in place, and yet, it didn’t feel quite right.

Not because anything was wrong,
but because nothing was fully connected.

Often, it comes down to small things:
materials that don’t quite relate, a lack of contrast, or no clear point for the eye to settle.

The layout remained the same,
but the way the space feels changed completely.

If your space works, but doesn’t quite feel right, I would be happy to talk.

There is a moment in every project where everything starts to settle.
Not when the layout is done.
Not when the furniture is selected.
But when the materials begin to sit together in a way that feels right.
Not forced. Not overly styled.
Just… resolved.
This is where things are refined.
Adjusting tones slightly.
Balancing texture against texture.
Softening where something feels to sharp.
Adding depth where something feels flat.
Once these decisions are made well, the rest of the space follows more easily.
And more importantly, it feels calm to live in.

If you are working through a space and something isn’t quite settling, you are welcome to get in touch, happy to talk.

One of the most meaningful moments in my work is when a client chooses to collaborate again.

The Holborn workplace project marks the second time this client has trusted MFA Home Design to shape their environment.

The aim was to create a calm and welcoming setting for both staff and visitors, balancing refined aesthetics with the practical needs of a busy team.

Thoughtful design has a quiet but powerful influence on how people work, collaborate and experience a space each day.

I’m very grateful for the trust placed in MFA Home Design and delighted with the outcome of this project.

This isn’t about the light …

This is the second look at the GM office within the Holborn Project, focusing on the details that quietly shape the space.

Vertical wood panelling detailing introduces rhythm without overpowering the room.
The meeting table grounds the setting for discussion.
Lighting is layered to soften rather than dominate.
Artwork adds movement while keeping the atmosphere composed.

Nothing here is dramatic.

But together, these elements create a space that feels balanced, professional and calm.

And in a leadership space, that matters.

If you had to describe your workplace in one word, what would it be?

A calm, grounded space designed to support clarity throughout the working day.

This is the General Manager’s private office within our Holborn project, a space designed to support focused individual work, while also accommodating meetings when needed, without compromising its sense of calm.

The desk and meeting table coexist naturally within the same room, allowing the space to move effortlessly between concentration and conversation. The round table softens the environment and creates a more open and balanced setting, without the formality of sitting across a desk.

Wall panelling defines the meeting area and brings structure and permanence to the space, while allowing the rest of the room to remain open and uncluttered.

When an environment feels settled and quietly supportive, it allows the person using it to focus fully on what matters.

A closer look at how the Holborn Project collaboration room is used day to day, and some of its details.

The details here are subtle, but intentional, from the way the furniture is scaled to how materials sit alongside one another.

Rather than a formal meeting room, the space was designed to feel more relaxed, supporting smaller group discussions, collaborative work and flexible hot desking.

It’s a room that is used throughout the day for discussions, focused work or simply as a place to sit and work away from the main office.
Those requirements shaped both the layout and the balance of materials throughout the room.
A preserved moss and oxide sound dampening wall were introduced, adding texture and a quiet sense of calm to the space.
