Join our mailing list from this link http://bit.ly/9OWPEo. In January 1928, Archibald John Mills and his family arrived at the picturesque area of Forty Hill in Enfield and established a plant nursery on part of an estate, taking over land that had formerly been used to grow fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers for a grand adjoining 18th Century Mansion, the Clockhouse. He kept the name, and the Cl

ockhouse Nursery was born - a business that is now owned and run by the third consecutive generation of the Mills family. In Archibald’s skilled hands, the enterprise thrived, and produce and flowers were soon being sold from a stall at the historic Market Square in Enfield. As word spread about top quality produce and good value, trade steadily grew into the 1950’s. As custom increased through that decade, more and more customers wanted to buy direct from the nursery, buying cut flowers - Chrysanthemums and Dahlias were favourites - and there was a brisk trade in tomatoes and bedding plants. With that demand, the range of plants increased until it was beyond what a mere stall could cope with. A decision was made to give up the stall altogether and shift the business completely to the Clockhouse site that customers have visited ever since. The 1970’s was a decade of change, expansion and modernisation. New facilities were built - modern aluminium greenhouses, an expanded sales area, and a spacious car park to accommodate the increased car custom. Shrubs, conifers and hardy perennials were brought in to supply increasing demand. As people’s knowledge and understanding of gardening increased, so their demand for range and quality increased - they didn’t just want top quality plants - they wanted the best pots, composts, hanging baskets and garden treatments. Clockhouse Nursery, with a wealth of experience, was uniquely placed to keep up with that demand, always adding new plants to its “repertoire”, searching out and stocking up on the best quality products while resisting the temptation to clutter our sales space with barbecues, fountains and space heaters. Instead, concentrating on what we know best - plants and how to grow them. And that’s exactly what we continue to do today. Inevitably, some aspects of the business have changed. In the past, plants were hand-reared and grown. Nowadays a vast array of computerised machinery is involved, from computer-controlled benches and automatic irrigation systems to robotic trans-planters. Most production is still on site, but due to lack of space, some of the larger specimen and rare plants are produced by our associate growers here in the UK, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium and New Zealand. No matter where or how our plants are grown the same core idea of top quality at affordable prices and a, no nonsense approach, remains. Not many Garden Centres can boast an eighty-year history, and yes, we have seen many changes over that period. Indeed change will continue as we strive always to supply the best in plants and facilities. One thing, however, will never change. The core philosophy first introduced by Archibald John way back in 1928 remains - the philosophy that built the company’s reputation, sustains it now, and will guide it in the future: that the best way to keep gardeners happy is to offer them plants of the highest quality, sold at reasonable prices.

Week 22: Back Up Plants

The weather has certainly done a bit of a U turn and we’ve been enjoying this cooler weather, even with the odd storm mixed in. There’s still plenty of summer bedding stock, but it will reduce considerably over the next couple of weeks.

Don’t panic, we have produced some late stock of larger 3 litre plants of Geraniums and New Guinea Impatiens, plus potted Bizzie Lizzies and Begonias for late comers and gap filling when you come back from holiday and the neighbour hasn’t quite watered properly! It’s not a huge range, but enough to still look good and plug any gaps.

Although we have had considerable rain, still keep an eager eye on your tubs and baskets as they do not benefit as much as ground beds and remember to keep feeding for maximum show.

Pack bedding offer!

Our pack bedding is already a great price at £2.79, but we now have an amazing offer running on them where you can get 4 for £10!

This makes them £2.50 each and the good news is that once you are passed buying 4, you’ve unlocked that price, so each one after is also £2.50! For example, 5 would by £12.50, 6 would be £15 and so on.

This offer is on our pack bedding and is mix and match whilst stocks last.

Week 21: Hydration

Hopefully everyone’s been coping in this heatwave and we will have a bit of a relief soon. Don’t forget it’s not just us who need to keep hydrated, but the gardens too! It’s seems like only last week we were reminding you to not forget about potentially frosty nights, but now it’s a reminder not to neglect watering. It’s best to do it in the early morning or in the evening after the sun is going down, so the water doesn’t evaporate too quickly. Geraniums (pictured) are best watered in the early morning, so the foliage dries off in the day, preventing rot.

At the nursery, there’s still plenty of stock of bedding and patio plants and the perennials and shrubs are being topped up regularly too.

Pot grown bedding and patio plants for gap filling or replacing any losses will also be available later on.

One last reminder to keep watering and remember if there’s some rain, it’s unlikely to be enough, so still top up with the hose!

Summer Speedy Planters are here!

You may remember our video showing how to plant the spring edition of these and they were in high demand. Now we have these summer versions ready to brighten up your gardens in a super speedy fashion for £14.99.

There are holes at the bottom of the planter for the roots to make their way through and grow in whatever you plant them in. They look great in a decorative pot or hanging basket!

Did you know that we are Dog Friendly?

Well, actually animal friendly, as we have been known to have cats and a parrot visit too!

Why not treat your furry friends to a trip out and pick up some plants at the same time. It’s great mental stimulation and a chance to socialise and practise any training with them!

You should then have a nicely tired out dog who can snooze whilst you plant your new plants!
