🌼 Edgeworthia chrysantha ‘Grandiflora’ — the Paperbush
A rare plant to find in this maturity and a truly remarkable shrub flowering in late winter and early spring (February–March in the UK).

This is the ‘Grandiflora’ variety, loved for its larger clusters of golden-yellow flowers which appear on bare branches before the leaves emerge, filling the garden with a rich honey-like fragrance when little else is in bloom.

It’s actually a favourite plant in my own garden — we planted one a few years ago along the pathway leading towards our office so we can enjoy the flowers and take in the fragrance as we walk through the garden each day.

Fascinating facts about this beautiful plant:

• Known as Paperbush because the bark fibres of Edgeworthia chrysantha have traditionally been used in Japan to make strong handmade washi paper.

• The fibres of the species were historically used to produce Japanese banknotes because of their exceptional strength and durability.

The ornamental cultivar ‘Grandiflora’ is grown mainly for its beautiful flowers, but as it belongs to the same species it shares the same fibrous bark historically used for papermaking.

• The flower buds are covered in silvery silky hairs, which help protect them from winter cold and give the plant ornamental interest even before the flowers open.

• It’s also a great example of a hysteranthous plant — meaning it flowers before the foliage appears, creating that striking late-winter display on bare branches.

An exceptional shrub for adding winter fragrance, early spring flowers and architectural interest to the garden.

Do you remove the hessian when planting root-balled hedging in the UK?

NO 👎

Root-balled hedge plants are field-grown and lifted with soil around the roots, wrapped in biodegradable hessian to keep the root ball intact. Why use rootballed v potted? Root-balled hedging is often more cost-effective and the plants have been grown in open ground rather than confined to a pot, they develop naturally and can achieve more substantial growth before lifting. Both grow in the same way once planted

The best time for planting root-balled hedging in the UK is during the lifting season, typically from autumn through to March. Most growers stop lifting by the end of March as temperatures rise, although some specimens may finish earlier and others later, depending on weather conditions.

Yew (taxus) hedging often can be dug later for example but it depends on the expertise of the growers. And we have the know how (30 years at our plant centre) to hold selected plants, trees and hedging even later in the year on our own sites. But the vast majority of rootballed hedging needs planting by end of March.

When handling root-balled hedging, avoid dropping or disturbing the root ball. Move plants carefully — ideally upright on a trolley — and position them close to the planting hole before gently lowering them in with the hessian still in place.

Before backfilling, water the root ball thoroughly while it is sitting in the planting hole. This helps settle the roots and prevents dry pockets forming around the root system.

Natural hessian can remain in place, as it will biodegrade in the soil over time. Once positioned, loosen or untie it from around the stem.

If there is a wire basket, this can usually stay on, but cut and fold back the top section after planting to allow the roots to establish freely.

Any plastic wrapping must always be removed before planting, as plastic will not break down and can restrict root growth.

Planting root-balled hedging at the correct time and handling it properly ensures strong establishment, particularly in wet UK ground conditions.
If you’re unsure about timing or planting methods, ask us before you plant — we’re always happy to advise.

Would you like to see more of our many varieties of rootballed hedging including Thuja plicata, Smaragd Brabant and Taxus Yew hedging and laurels including Cherry and Portugal laurels ?

If YES just DM me and I will send video clips which I have of many sizes from customers orders going out this weekend- just make sure you are following Paramountplants 😉
.. Why choose root-balled hedging in the UK?

Root-balled hedge plants are field-grown and lifted with sufficient soil still around the roots, creating a strong, intact root system — unlike bare-root hedging where roots are exposed when lifted.

✔️ Stronger root structure
✔️ Better anchorage in wet UK ground
✔️ Reduced transplant shock
✔️ More reliable establishment

Root-balled hedging season typically ends in March, as growers stop lifting once temperatures rise.

That means there are roughly 6–8 weeks left to plant root-balled hedging before the season closes.

Allow around 2 weeks from ordering ro delivery as our rootballed hedging is freshly lifted from the ground and prepared and sent to you as soon as possible from being dug to be planted.

If you’re planning hedge planting this year, now is the ideal time.

📩 DM us “HEDGE” for advice, availability and pricing. Let me know your preferred hedging if you know otherwise we are happy fo advise.

Now is the time 🌧️🌱That means the clock is ticking ⏳

Root-balled hedging is ideal to plant right now, especially with the wet ground conditions we’re seeing across the UK.

These plants are field-grown and lifted with a strong, intact root system — giving them excellent structure and reliability, similar to containerised stock. My videos show some of the hundreds of rootballed hedging plants being delivered this week

But the season is short.

Growers typically stop lifting root-balled plants by the end of March, once temperatures begin to rise and the plants move into active growth. After that, supply closes until the next season.

We’ve got roughly 6–8 weeks to get them in the ground while conditions are perfect for establishment.

✔️ Strong root system
✔️ Ideal planting moisture
✔️ Limited seasonal window
✔️ Best time to secure stock

If you’re planning hedging this year, now’s the moment to act.

Choosing the correct root system makes all the difference to strength and reliability.of your hedging and trees .

One of the questions we’re asked most at Paramount Plants is what the real difference is between rootballed, container-grown and bare-root plants — and why it matters. We’re now past the sensible window for bare-root planting, which means rootballed and container-grown plants are the most reliable choice for planting.

Quite simply, rootballed and container-grown trees and shrubs establish faster, anchor better, and cope far more reliably with real-world conditions, because their roots stay protected in soil from nursery to garden.

Container-grown plants are grown in pots, with roots fully contained in compost. They have a complete, working root system and can be planted across a much longer season with minimal stress.

Rootballed plants are field-grown, then lifted with a ball of soil wrapped around the roots. This protects fine feeder roots, provides instant stability, and makes them ideal for trees and hedging — especially when planting a whole line of plants evenly. Useful for hedging plants like these laurels.

Bare-root plants are lifted with exposed roots and no soil attached. They rely on deep winter dormancy, perfect timing and careful aftercare to succeed.
Not the choice for mature established plants.

For hedging, evergreen varieties such as Laurel and Portugal laurel perform particularly well as rootballed plants, offering good root mass, faster establishment and strong, even results along a hedge line.
