Repointing Somerset

Repointing Somerset Thomas Kenrick I specialise in re-pointing using natural lime mortar. I have repointed both brick and stone buildings

I am trained as a building conservator and stone mason as well is having a degree in fine Art Sculpture. In my career have worked on everything from simple garden walls to listed buildings, cathedrals and even roman remains. using natural lime mortar dramatically improves the look of any building as well as improving its performance and often value. I can work on my own or use a team of professional subcontractors to undertake jobs of any size.

Some more photos from Bayford.
The customer asked me to put some stone steps into the wall in the style of the Newt in Somerset. I used the same quarry and with any luck achieving the same result.

It's not all pointing!

I've just replaced this Doulting stone window mullion in Evercreech. The property had been burgled and the window surround was significantly damaged when the wooden frame was forced.

Happy to say the customer is absolutely delighted with the result — and I've even arranged for a joiner to come in and replace the timber window too. Full restoration, start to finish! ✅

I've been in Bayford this week, continuing the careful restoration of this beautiful 18th century walled garden and helping bring it back to its former glory.
Decades of weathering and neglect had taken their toll, with sections of the wall beginning to fail and areas at risk of collapse. Some of the original bricks had deteriorated beyond repair and needed replacing, while many others could thankfully be conserved and retained. Almost all of the old pointing had failed and required raking out and repointing with appropriate lime mortar.
It’s always rewarding working on historic masonry like this. The aim is not to make it look new, but to preserve its character and ensure it stands strong for many more generations.

We have just finished this small but rewarding project on an end terrace in Street, Somerset. We carefully removed the inappropriate cement strap pointing, carried out localised mortar repairs, and repointed the masonry using a traditional lime mortar.
The difference is more than just visual allowing the building to breathe again is key to its long-term health. A great example of how the right materials and a bit of care can really bring a building back to life

I was lucky to have been part of the team behind the renovation of The Prickly Pear (formerly The Castle) in Burton!
During the work, something fascinating was uncovered, once the render was removed, many of the stones were revealed to be worn completely smooth. This is because they were recycled from an old stable floor! 🪨
I believe those stones may have originally come from the stables of Bruton Abbey, taken after the Reformation. The building itself, long thought to be 18th century, could actually date back to the 16th century and the stone itself significantly older than that.
History hiding in plain sight!

I’ve just finished conserving Penselwood Village Hall, and it’s been a really rewarding project.
I mostly work on private properties, so it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to work in the public realm, where everyone can see and appreciate the results of our efforts.
The hall had previously been rendered in a grey cement that wasn’t very sympathetic to the building. Unfortunately, it also covered up a multitude of issues—from eroded stonework to poorly fitted leadwork. As the project progressed, it became clear that more extensive work was needed.
In the end, we removed the cement render, repointed the stonework, replaced all the leadwork, fitted new bargeboards, repainted the woodwork, and even installed a downpipe where there should have been one all along.

It’s great to see the building breathing again and restored in a way that respects its character. A real pleasure to meet so many members of the community and to be involved in a project the whole village can enjoy.

It's nice to see the farm house with freshly painted windows. I think the combination of lighter window frames and the lime pointing has really brought this property to life.

I just received this review from Mark after re-pointing his house in Butleigh.

"Tom and his team were diligent, good to have around but most importantly did a fantastic job of pointing our house. It brought it to life, and we are delighted"

Today I went to Butleigh to carry out a repair on a small crack in the wall. Whilst I was in the village I thought I'd take some photos of some of the other jobs I have completed.

This old cottage in East Pennard had been re-pointing in harsh grey cement. Some of the masonry had decayed to the point that it needed repairing with mortar repairs.
