I’ve just finished conserving Penselwood Village Hall, and it’s been a really rewarding project.
I mostly work on private properties, so it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to work in the public realm, where everyone can see and appreciate the results of our efforts.
The hall had previously been rendered in a grey cement that wasn’t very sympathetic to the building. Unfortunately, it also covered up a multitude of issues—from eroded stonework to poorly fitted leadwork. As the project progressed, it became clear that more extensive work was needed.
In the end, we removed the cement render, repointed the stonework, replaced all the leadwork, fitted new bargeboards, repainted the woodwork, and even installed a downpipe where there should have been one all along.
It’s great to see the building breathing again and restored in a way that respects its character. A real pleasure to meet so many members of the community and to be involved in a project the whole village can enjoy.
