An iconic Portsmouth landmark, refreshed for the future and a look back at some historic photos.
Following a major refurbishment programme by Portsmouth City Council and specialist contractors, the landmark has now been restored to its full glory with new sail panels, structural upgrades and enhanced lighting ensuring the structure remains resilient for years to come.
Originally designed by HGP Architects and unveiled in 2001, the 43m-high Sails of the South continue to welcome millions of visitors into Portsmouth each year, standing proudly at the gateway to our maritime city.
Inspired by the three directions of the motorway intersection and Portsmouth’s enduring maritime identity, naval, commercial and recreational, the landmark was conceived as both sculpture and infrastructure: a memorable arrival point announcing entry into the city.
The Tri-Sail structure was designed to withstand the demanding conditions of its exposed coastal location, with more than 60 supporting cables providing stability against the high winds and sea air of the English Channel. Creating a robust, elegant and enduring design was central to the project from the very beginning.
We’re proud to have worked closely with Portsmouth City Council throughout the refurbishment, continuing our long-standing involvement with one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
It’s fantastic to see the sails once again making such a bold statement on the skyline as Portsmouth celebrates its centenary year as a city.

A brilliant HGP study trip down to Brighton this week, taking in a series of transformational residential, education and mixed-use developments shaping the South Coast.

Our first stop was the impressive Mithras Student Housing alongside the University of Brighton Business School and Advanced Engineering Centre buildings, part of the wider masterplan by Hassell Studio to provide a coherent design-led consolidation of identity across the university’s 5 campuses. It was fantastic to experience how the Moulsecoomb campus has evolved through a thoughtful and ambitious approach to placemaking, connectivity and public realm, breaking down boundaries between education, business and community.

We also explored Studio Egret West’s more fine-grained and community-focused Preston Barracks development, including the innovative Plus X building and Linear Park, a great example of how layered, mixed-use neighbourhoods can foster collaboration, creativity and wellbeing.

The morning finished with a visit to Moda Hove Central, where the team generously showed us around their exceptional amenity spaces and beautifully designed show apartments. A huge thank you to the Moda team for the tour and insight into the delivery of this landmark PRS scheme.

As HGP continues to make its own mark on the South Coast, having recently secured planning approval for a new residential development adjacent to Moda Hove Central, and now progressing through BSR approval and towards delivery, we are always keen to learn from and witness the achievements of others.

These transformational schemes were inspiring to experience firsthand and will no doubt continue to influence and inform our own work as we help shape the next chapter of coastal living and urban regeneration.

Approved - Gunwharf Quays Waterfront!

Another milestone for an iconic waterfront destination.
We’re delighted that HGP’s proposals for the new Gunwharf Quays waterfront frontage have now received planning approval, helping to secure and reimagine the future of this landmark destination for the next 25 years.
Appointed by Landsec earlier this year, the project has evolved through extensive collaboration, consultation and design development, culminating in an exciting proposal that reconnects and revitalises the waterfront experience.
The scheme brings together the two main waterfront blocks with a generous new terrace spanning the primary route to the marina, while the transformation of the All Bar One frontage replaces the existing heavy aesthetic with a lighter, glazed form inspired by the elegance and refinement of yachts, opening up uninterrupted views across the water.
As the project moves forward, we’re excited to continue developing the finer details that will help deliver a vibrant, high-quality destination experience.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in getting the project to this stage.
We’re already looking forward to a future Christmas-do on the new waterfront terrace!

Ground breaking news - Construction is underway!

We’re proud to be supporting the Homes for Brighton & Hove partnership between Brighton & Hove City Council and Hyde Group, with delivery of much-needed affordable homes in Hove, at the former Sackville Trading Estate. Following our involvement in a successful planning application late last year, site is now progressing to provide 306 new high-quality homes, including rent and shared ownership options, helping to address local housing need while creating a vibrant, sustainable community.

The scheme sits adjacent the successful Moda Living’s, Hove Central, and intends to respond in kind, by extending the neighbourhood through design that has both people and place in mind. Residents will have energy efficient homes with a focus on sustainable travel, including initiatives such as subsidised bus/rail passes, Beryl bike credit vouchers and car club membership, alongside strong connections to public transport and local amenities.

It’s great to be part of such a collaborative process alongside Hyde, Brighton & Hove City Council, with project partners Homes England and Moda, not to mention the design and construction teams to bring forward high-quality, inclusive housing for the city.

We look forward to seeing this development continue to take shape.

Planning submitted! We’re delighted to be working with Landsec on the reimagining of the waterfront at Gunwharf Quays.

Over 25 years since the original vision, it’s a privilege to return to this landmark waterfront destination, this time helping to shape its future, enhancing experience-led shopping, to retain it’s position as a leading premium outlet destination.

As original masterplanner for the scheme, and architect behind the Spinnaker Tower, this project holds a special place for us. The latest proposals will enhance dining alongside the marina setting with expanded terraces, refreshed façades, improved public realm and better connectivity, creating a stronger, more engaging waterfront experience.

First masterplanned by HGP, the transformation of this former naval site into a vibrant mixed-use destination reconnected Portsmouth with its harbour, creating the UK’s only waterfront outlet of its kind. It’s an exciting moment of renewal. We’re proud to bring our expertise in waterfront development to a project with such a lasting legacy and especially meaningful for us to return and continue to be part of Gunwharf’s evolution strengthening its connection to the harbour, the city and the communities it serves.

A major milestone for One One Six, Cockfosters 🎉

Working alongside Chase New Homes and a fantastic consultant team, the project has successfully achieved Gateway 2 and Gateway 3 approval under the Building Safety Regulator, enabling occupation of the scheme’s 9-storey residential building.

Originally designed before the introduction of the new Building Safety Regime, the project required significant collaboration, coordination and regulatory engagement to navigate the updated approval process.

It’s a great example of what can be achieved through strong teamwork across the client, design and regulatory teams.

Well done to everyone involved, including BDC, Whitecode Consulting, OFR and BCC Building Control Consultancy.

As Portsmouth looks ahead to its centenary celebrations, it is wonderful to see the Council investing in the careful renovation of the iconic Sails of the South.

Originally designed by HGP Architects more than 25 years ago, the structure has truly stood the test of time, becoming a recognisable landmark on the waterfront and a proud part of the city’s identity. Thoughtfully conceived to reflect Portsmouth’s rich maritime heritage, the Sails continue to frame the skyline as confidently today as when they were first installed.

We have greatly valued the opportunity to work closely with the Council on this latest phase of refurbishment, ensuring the structure is refreshed and ready to play its part in the centenary celebrations and for many years to come.

It is always a privilege to revisit a project decades later and see how enduring design continues to serve its community, and especially rewarding to help safeguard its future.
