A few moments from the nursery this week 🌿

Last Saturday marked our final Saturday opening of the season, we’re now back to our usual weekday opening, but there are still plenty of buds waiting to open and lots more colour still to come.

Behind the scenes it’s been a week of weeding, trimming, potting, spacing and deadheading. A hot one, so we tried to stick to the shade where we could, with the family in tow too, but nursery life carries on whatever the weather.

Hope you all managed to enjoy some sunshine in your own gardens this week.

Deciduous Azalea ‘Yellow Pom Pom’ earns its name in the best possible way. Each rounded truss is packed with 18–24 individual double yellow flowers, creating cheerful, floating pom poms that seem to hover amongst the foliage.

A real mood-lifter in the garden, it works beautifully threaded through sunny borders with later flowering perennials to add pops of colour higher up amongst the planting. Bright, joyful, and just a little bit different.

Just a few days ago we were rushing around fleecing plants because of frost… and now suddenly we’re watering because it feels like summer. Typical spring.

If you want your rhododendrons and azaleas to keep looking their best in this heat, watering early in the day really helps, and always try to get water down to the roots rather than over the leaves.

For container plants, we often use saucers in hot weather to help hold moisture and avoid wasting water, and if you’re using peat free compost you’ll probably notice it dries out a bit quicker too.

And don’t stop watering once the flowers are over — that’s when next year’s flower buds are already starting to form. A bit of care now really does make a difference later on.

Deciduous Azalea ‘Royal Command’ certainly lives up to its name. Large, rich, fiery red flowers appear in generous trusses, creating a real burst of colour that brings instant drama to the garden.

A strong grower, it looks especially good planted where those bold tones can shine. Like many deciduous azaleas it also rewards you later in the year with beautiful autumn colour when it's striking leaves turn from green to copper.

Rhododendron ‘Sappho’ almost doesn’t look real up close. The large white flowers are striking enough, but it’s the throat that steals the show — a dramatic splash of deep purple, almost like paint splattered across the petals, making every flower feel slightly different.

A much-loved old variety with a lovely upright habit, it becomes absolutely smothered in flowers when established, creating a real moment in the garden. Elegant from afar, fascinating up close — it’s easy to see why this one has remained a favourite.

A job every gardener dreads…

The weeds have definitely got away from us over the last few weeks. Between shows, orders and spring being in full swing, they’ve taken full advantage of the warm, wet conditions in the polytunnels, especially as we try to use fewer chemicals. At one point, you could barely see some of the young plants.

So it’s been extra hours, muddy knees, coffee, audiobooks, and a bit of help to get back on top of it. The staff have been working incredibly hard, and while there’s still plenty to do, the plants are looking much happier already.

Getting down and dirty behind the scenes is all part of nursery life and hopefully, with a good start like this, these young plants will be covered in flowers before too long.

Deciduous Azalea ‘Silver Slipper’ (AGM) is a favourite for good reason. Before the flowers even open, the pink and cream buds look almost like little iced gems floating above the border, before unfolding into large white flowers with soft yellow throats.

Elegant and easy to place, it looks beautiful in dappled shade or a woodland border. Then in autumn, the foliage turns a lovely coppery colour, a plant with more than one season to enjoy.

Rhododendron ‘Blaue Jungs’ or translated “Blue Boys” is one of those varieties grown purely for colour. The flowers are a rich violet-blue with an incredible depth to them, especially on dull spring days when they almost seem to glow against the dark green foliage.

Compact and reliable, it’s a tough plant perfect for dappled shade or a woodland border, where that unusual colouring can really stand out. A brilliant choice if you’re drawn to the cooler blue and purple tones in the garden.

Typical British weather 4 seasons in one day; frost first thing, followed by hail then finishing the day with blue skies and sun.

Hopefully the last of the frost is behind us for now, so we uncovered the plant centre again and it really is bursting into colour. The rhododendrons and azaleas are putting on a proper display at the moment. One of those times where photos barely do it justice, you really have to see it to believe it. We are open all week and Saturdays throughout May so hope you can visit.
