I have been a painter and decorator for more than 40 years, following my father into the trade who had a decorating company and gave me a good start. My Grandfather on my mother’s side was a decorator with the highest reputation in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. All of his boys, 5 in number followed him into the trade. So I am the third generation of painters; it’s in my blood. I believe that gett
ing the right start and having the good fortune of having a good teacher is the foundation for any good tradesman. I have been most fortunate and am particularly grateful to two people who have had the greatest influence on me as a tradesman. I was apprenticed to Malcolm Philips, a wallpaper specialist who not only taught me to hang wallpaper to the highest standard but also showed me the meaning of integrity; never compromising the quality of ones work even when no one but you would know the difference. I learned the meaning of taking pride in your work and the pursuit of excellence. I had the opportunity to work full time hanging wallpaper and received instruction on a vast range of wall coverings including silk strand, foil and later hand printed wallpaper. Over the years I have enjoyed working with all varieties of wallpaper always looking for ways to produce a perfect end result. After working with Malcolm and my father I went to work under the guidance of Dave Puttock of Fleet who shaped my skills with the paint brush. Dave was old school maintaining the highest reputation in his family established business since 1942. He patiently pushed my skill set up a few levels and taught me much about the traditional approach to decorating period properties. Sadly Dave was involved in a fatal car accident in 1987 and his widow Margret passed the good will of the business on to me. I ran the business in my own name for 5 years before taking time out to travel when recession hit. After some years traveling I came back to Farnham and went to work for my friend Jamie Elstow managing Director of Marshels of Farnham. I worked for Marshels for 15 years which took me into a large variety of projects working as a foreman. From Palladian Mansions for National trust, to commercial sites and the homes of a many people who would become regular clients that I would return to on request over the years. I was lucky to build some nice working relationships with these clients and always enjoyed this aspect of the job. Marshels supplied me with many wallpapering jobs and many jobs that involved specialist paint finishes. Over the years I have refined my skills and pride myself on achieving the finest finish; smooth to touch and crisp, tight sight lines.
