A respected local Arboricultural Consultant (Ben Rose of Bosky Trees) had been called in by to assess a Norway Maple at Victoria Park in Frome that had recently shed a large limb. The limb had crashed into the boundary fence that separates the park from the Avanti School infantโs playground and raised obvious concerns about the safety of the tree. Upon inspection, Ben discovered fruiting bodies of the aggressive decay fungi Kretzschmaria deusta in the major unions of the crown. This fungi is known for itโs ability to rapidly decay both the soft (cellulose) and hard (lignified) tissue within a tree, diminishing the structural integrity of the wood and accelerating the risk of catastrophic stem or limb failure. Rooted in such close proximity to both the school and also within a popular public park, there was no choice but to safely remove the tree to eliminate the high risk to people and property. We never take the removal of such trees lightly and recognised that it would understandably be upsetting to the many who have appreciated this tree for many years. Working conscientiously over two days, we safely brought the tree down, carefully lowering each section to the ground using rigging lines and pulleys, to avoid damage to the ground, pavement, fence, shrubs and herbaceous plantings below the crown. We kept an open communication with the public who voiced their concerns and explained the reasoning for the works. Hopefully easing their understandable upset. The stump was removed by (masters of their craft!) and the felled stem will be milled/ carved into a bench for park users to enjoy for years to come. New trees will be planted to ensure the continuation of this historic park and its arboretum collection of specimen trees.
