Activity based working isn't a new idea. But it's being taken seriously now in a way it wasn't before.

The principle is simple: instead of giving everyone a desk and a meeting room down the corridor, you design a floor plate that offers genuine choice. Focused work areas, collaborative zones, social spaces, touchdown spots. James explains what that mix looks like and why it tends to mean companies need less space than they think.

The Trinity Building in Halifax is a Grade II listed brutalist building, originally completed in the 1970s and largely untouched since.

Lloyds Banking Group needed it to work as a contemporary workplace, supporting hybrid working, wellbeing and flexibility, without losing what made the building architecturally significant in the first place.

Large floor plates, complex structural arrangements and a heritage listing all shaped the approach from the outset. The challenge wasn't just technical. It was about understanding what the building was, and what it needed to become.

Tom was back on site in Antrim last week, where the structure is really starting to take shape. With the steelwork now in place, the stepped design is clearly visible and the concept is coming to life.

At the heart of the scheme is the idea of a heavy masonry brick wall wrapping around the building to create a private walled garden to the north of the site, strengthening the relationship between the internal and external spaces.

The change in level across the site has also allowed us to develop a stepped approach, helping to maximise views and light to the south through the existing trees and landscape.

Looking back at Sergeants Park, our affordable housing development in Newtown St Boswells, delivered for Eildon Housing Association.

This 128-home community was designed to create a sustainable, connected neighbourhood that strengthens links between the town and surrounding countryside while making the most of stunning views towards the Cheviot Hills.

Project highlights:

• 128 high-quality homes within a sustainable neighborhood setting.

• Strong pedestrian and community connections to the town and surrounding countryside.

• High-quality streetscapes with active frontages and reduced car dominance.

• A development that maximises views towards the Cheviot Hills.

• Reduced construction impact through efficient site-wide material management.

• A vibrant and well-integrated community aligned with client and stakeholder aspirations.

This is a great example of how thoughtful design can deliver lasting social, environmental, and placemaking value.

As part of our commitment to supporting local communities and strengthening industry partnerships, Aitken Turnbull was pleased to accept an invitation from Wates Smartspace, extended through Gleeds and the Government Property Agency, to take part in a Volunteering Day at Heaton Park.

Coinciding with Volunteers' Week, it was great to see Gavin representing Aitken Turnbull alongside 20 other volunteers. The day focused on environmental improvement activities, including gardening and woodland management, helping to enhance and preserve this valuable green space.

Events like this demonstrate the positive impact that collaboration can have, bringing organisations together to support local communities and the environment.

Well done to everyone involved!

Our team are proud to have completed the 100 Miles in May Challenge, raising over £750 for CHAS in the process.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, donated, and supported the team throughout the month. Not only did we raise money for a fantastic cause, but the challenge also encouraged us to get active, prioritise wellbeing, and spend more time outdoors.

This is just the beginning of our fundraising journey, with more activities planned throughout the year.

Thank you for helping us make a difference.

Sebastian, Rebecca and Alex were on site last week visiting our latest workspace project, a major fit-out spanning nine floors. Seeing a project in person brings drawings and plans to life, giving the team a much better understanding of how the space is coming together.

Site visits are also a valuable opportunity to meet with contractors, review progress, address any issues early, and make sure everything is moving forward as planned. For team members like Alex, our technician, and Rebecca, our Part 2 Architectural Assistant, it’s also a chance to gain hands-on experience and deepen their understanding of how projects take shape on site.

It’s always exciting to see the progress first-hand and to be reminded of the collaboration that goes into delivering spaces like these.

Taking on responsibility can feel challenging, especially early in your career.

But it’s also where resilience is built.

Deadlines, pressure and problem solving are all part of the process. Over time, people learn how to manage these challenges and grow from them.

Mistakes become learning opportunities.

Confidence comes from facing those situations and handling them.

With the right support around you, pressure can become something positive. It helps people develop, improve and build resilience for the future.

With only 2 days left of our walking challenge, here’s a big shoutout to the real team leaders — the dogs who’ve been by our sides every step of the way.

The early alarm clocks, the unofficial pace setters, the treat negotiators, and the ones somehow still full of energy after our legs give up.

Progress, no matter how small, builds confidence.

Passing exams, gaining experience, and applying knowledge in real situations all contribute to a growing sense of self-belief.

Supportive teams also play a big role.

Knowing that you don’t have to have all the answers, and that learning is part of the process, helps people develop without unnecessary pressure.

Confidence grows over time, through experience, support and continuous learning.
