Week 4 on site for this new extension in Uddingston.

Steelwork in, timber kit up, roof on, and the main structural opening steel installed shortly after these photos were taken. Next big step will be the doors and glazing from in the next couple of weeks.

This visit was also to review the contractor’s valuation before certifying the next payment by interim certificate.

That’s part of our role when we’re providing Contract Administration. Not just popping out to site for a look, but checking progress, reviewing what has been claimed, and making sure payments are certified properly as the build moves on.

“We don’t need 3D visuals.”

Sometimes that’s true. But if you’re spending six figures on an extension, I’d much rather you understood the space properly before anyone starts building it.

Plans and sections are important, but most clients don’t read them every day. A 3D visual helps show how the ceiling, rooflights, exposed beams, kitchen and natural light all come together as one space.

This Newlands Conservation Area extension is now on the home straight, and it’s good to see the finished space lining up so closely with the original visual.

That’s the point of the 3D work. Not just to make pretty images, but to give clients confidence in what they’re signing off before it becomes expensive to change.

A few final bits to go, but not far off now.

Building Warrant approved for this kitchen extension in Giffnock.

The clients bought the house knowing they wanted to do something better with the rear of it, and brought us in to help work out what that could be.

Planning and warrant are now both approved, so the project can start moving properly towards site with

I’ve included the existing photo too, because it shows the change pretty clearly. From a fairly tired rear extension to a new kitchen space with big arched glazing, dark timber cladding and a much better connection out to the garden.

There are a couple of warrant drawings in the post as well. We don’t show them enough, but clear and coordinated drawings are what help make the pretty pictures buildable.

Going to be a cracker!

We’re hiring a Project Architect.

We’re looking for a fourth team member to join our Glasgow city centre studio and work with us on high-value residential projects across the Central Belt.

We’re a small team, so communication, ownership and initiative matter. We’re also always trying to improve how we work, from our design process to our systems, client experience and project delivery.

Role: Project Architect
Location: Glasgow city centre / hybrid
Salary: £35k–£45k DOE + bonus
Hours: 35-hour week

Final few bits to go at this new build home in Bothwell.

The outside is almost there now, with landscaping nearly complete. Inside, the staircase is due to be installed and the clients are dealing with the joys of the kitchen company ordering the wrong appliances, which has caused a bit of delay.

Not far off now though. Should hopefully be over the line shortly.

Great to see this one moving on site in the Bothwell Conservation Area.

This is our third project on site on one of the most recognised streets in Bothwell, which is always a nice position to be in.

This build includes a two storey side extension, a large detached triple garage and an extension to the existing garage.

Stone, timber, conservation setting. Should be something special.

One from the drawing board in Bothwell 🏡

We’re working on a full reconfiguration and extension of this house, with one of the main moves being a new double height entrance hall.

The clients wanted something with a bit of grandeur as soon as you walk in, so we’re looking at a new feature staircase, full height wall panelling with hidden storage, and a series of arches opening through to the main living spaces beyond.

Still plenty to refine, but this is starting to feel like the moment that sets the tone for the whole house.

Planning hopefully going in shortly.

Planning permission granted in 8 weeks for this Glasgow West Conservation Area project.

Not the most straightforward one. Several objections, and some initial pushback from Planning on what is a fairly bold move to the rear.

We met the planning officer on site and talked it through properly. The opening looks big on paper, but the approach is still conservation-led. It sits within the existing rear building, respects the proportions of the original structure, and is about making the space usable again rather than just opening it up for the sake of it.

The existing kitchen is going, replaced with a double height space with large sliding doors out to the courtyard. Part of a wider full renovation to bring the whole building back up to the level it deserves.

Good result in the end.

A huge moment for us at Abode.

We’ve now secured both Planning and Listed Building Consent for the sensitive restoration and conversion of this Category A listed townhouse and mews in Glasgow’s Park area.

The building includes significant works by Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh, c.1909, particularly within the principal interiors, and our role throughout has been to take a conservation-led approach to bringing it back into use.

That has meant carefully navigating how to:
– restore and retain the existing timber panelling and joinery
– remove paint from the stone and repair where required
– replace defective windows with appropriate new units
– address significant structural issues within the mews
– and undo years of piecemeal alteration in a way that protects the character of the building

The aim has never been change for the sake of it. It’s been about understanding what matters, protecting it properly, and finding a route to create a very special townhouse and mews property back in residential use.

A big milestone for the practice, and I can’t wait to take this on through construction and work with to deliver it properly on site.

Details coming together nicely on site in the Newlands Conservation Area.

This one was always about taking some of the traditional details of the existing house and reworking them in a more modern way, so it is good to see that starting to come through properly now.

We’re doing the contract administration on this as well, so keeping a close eye on it as it takes shape.

Looking forward to the doors and windows going in this week by . That always makes a big difference. Built by
