We are very pleased to share that Parkhead Hub has been nominated in the 2026 Scottish Design Awards in the Public Realm/Landscape category, as well as the Public Building category, Health Building or Project category, and the Architecture Client of the Year category!
At Parkhead Hub, erz designed a series of outdoor spaces to actively support the clinical work of the NHS – and its sustainability policies. Access to high quality greenspace reduces mortality rates and improves mental and physical health, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
The Hub serves 176,000 people. Primary care, mental health, addiction services, homelessness support, and community wellbeing are supported by the convivial and therapeutic outdoor spaces. Through a co-design process with the Parkhead community, outdoor spaces have been created that draw nature into the heart of the building.
A new plaza welcomes people from busy Duke Street, with south facing friendly seating under a canopy of native Scots Pines. The Hub’s intuitive internal layout is organised around three courtyards: greenspaces which soften the clinical environment and introduce natural light and seasonal change.
The courtyards are designed to support clinical practice, outdoor therapies, natural play and a sense of community. The publicly accessible west courtyard provides outdoor waiting and spill-out from the café, encouraging staff and patients to get outside into fresh air. The east courtyard includes a safely enclosed natural play-space, supporting maternity and early-years services. Natural play augments physical fitness, mental health, immune system development, cognitive skills, sleep patterns, and social confidence/resilience.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic project - we look forward to seeing you at the award ceremony!
