Before rubber mats and safety rails, children in the early 1900s braved playgrounds that looked more like obstacle courses.
Slides towered two or three stories high, built from wood or steel that baked in the sun. Carousels spun at breakneck speeds until kids flew off laughing—or crying. Monkey bars stretched dangerously high, with nothing but hard dirt waiting below.
And yet—these playgrounds were packed with kids every day. For many, it wasn’t just recreation. It was freedom. It was courage. It was childhood in an age when “safety standards” hadn’t been invented yet.
Looking back, it’s a wonder so many survived. But maybe that’s why old photos of these playgrounds still make us smile—because they remind us just how tough kids once had to be.
