1:200 scale model of the Social Restaurant

Social Restaurant + boundary intervention in the Dampoort district of Ghent, Belgium. The aim of the intervention was to strengthen social ties between the multicultural district, composed of mainly Turkish, Bulgarian and Belgians. Upon interviewing many shop and restaurant owners, they all agreed that segregation was rife between the different communities. Therefore, the ultimate goal of the social restaurant is to bring each community together in one place where they can share their cooking experience and knowledge, learn to cook, and also eat the food together. The boundary intervention focussed on the immediate site, experimenting with the public, collective and private spaces within the site. This intervention would be owned and driven by participants as much as possible. Enabling participants to make decisions about how the facility is run supports ownership, and overall the development of a successful sustainable initiative.
