We’re proud to share that two Coltart Earley projects have been shortlisted in the upcoming Scottish Home Awards!

Dover Street with Glasgow West Housing Association and Group delivers 55 flats and a commercial unit, designed as a contemporary tenement that completes a historic urban block in Finnieston.

Brandon Street with North Lanarkshire Council and CCG (Scotland) Ltd, provides 48 affordable homes across two new blocks and a restored B-listed YMCA building. Powered by ground source heat pumps, the development brings sustainable, zero-carbon living to the heart of Motherwell.

A busy time at Coltart Earley! Last week, our director Bill Coltart was invited by GlasgowCity Heritage Trust to present a CPD on the practice’s work on the complex structural repair of 8 Belhaven Terrace, a B-listed townhouse in Glasgow’s West End. During the session, he discussed the challenges faced in stabilising historic masonry, addressing issues of water ingress and rot while managing the project in a way that allowed residents to remain in situ throughout the work.

Project architect Colm Donnelly was invited by The Pavilion (Youth and Community Centre) in Easterhouse to present our Feasibility Study as part of the charity’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. This feasibility study includes a full redevelopment of the existing centre and creating proposals for a new Destination Park in Easterhouse.

Finally, project architect Jamie McCallum presented our work with CASTLEHILL HOUSING ASSOCIATION LIMITED at the Scottish Enterprise Clean Heat Retrofit Innovation Challenge Showcase. This project focuses on retrofitting an independent living accommodation building in Aberdeen and exploring innovative low-carbon heating solutions to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.

A showcase of the diverse range of projects we are currently working on at Coltart Earley Architecture. A big thank you to all our clients and partners, and we look forward to seeing all these projects progress in the future.

Coltart Earley Architecture have been appointed by North Lanarkshire Council to submit a Planning Application for the demolition of the flats at 3 Blocks at 1 – 204 Millcroft Road, Carbrain, Cumbernauld and the proposed construction of 72 new-build flatted units to Passivhaus Standard. This Planning Application is submitted to run concurrently with the ongoing Compulsory Purchase Order application which North Lanarkshire Council submitted to the Scottish Government in March 2023 to purchase the existing blocks.

The new housing development aims to create a new sense of place within Millcroft Road to Carbrain and Cumbernauld. This will be achieved by decreasing the density and reducing the urban wall of the existing blocks to enhance the openness and vistas between the new blocks. Moving from 169 existing flats to 72 new flats allows the creation of clearly defined spaces, external amenity spaces and car parking. The new external spaces provide landscaping and biodiversity in compliance with both NPF4 and North Lanarkshire Council’s LDP.

The existing high-level walkways are dysfunctional and anti-social and have been removed from the proposals. These walkways create unsafe, dark spaces with undefined ownership and a lack of accessibility to the development. All the proposed blocks have either level or lift access to all flats.

The new flats provide x8 two-bedroom / 3-person flats and x64 two-bedroom/4-person flats over x6 blocks, between three, four and five stories tall. They are designed to Housing for Varying Needs, Secure by Design Gold Accreditation and Passivhaus Classic Standard.

These low-energy homes help combat fuel poverty for tenants and provide betterment via the quality of architecture, design, and materials. The frontage of the development will act as a new gateway to Carbrain and to Cumbernauld from South Carbrain Road.

Delighted to announce we have received Planning Approval for the redevelopment of the former Shawbridge Arcade in Pollokshaws, Glasgow, to provide 71 new build appartments

Coltart Earley Architecture have been working with The Wheatley Group to create a new sense of place to this much-neglected site. The concept is to design new active frontages to the adjacent Ashtree Road, Greenview Street and MacArthur Square/Shawbridge Street. Modern iterations of traditional tenements combined with quality landscaping and kerb appeal look to address and improve the street quality.

Incorporating seven wheelchair-accessible properties, the development will address both the Old Town House of Pollokshaws as well as the John Maclean Memorial Cairn, with a corner block activated by ground and first-floor offices for GHA.

Single-storey service buildings conjoin each block to provide a continuous frontage while still permitting daylight through to the landscaped central courtyard. Textured brickwork elevations and tall windows are designed to evoke modern tenemental proportions.

Landscaping work to the neighbouring square will be subject to continued design development by Connecting Pollokshaws. Exciting news!

Kerr Street is a new affordable housing project located in the Kirkintilloch Conservation Area, delivered for East Dunbartonshire Council. It consists of 38 flats spread across two, three, and four-storey blocks. Situated on the former grounds of Lairdsland Primary School, this housing development tastefully incorporates architectural elements that resonate with the local surroundings, repurposing various features and materials from the previous structure. The design of the buildings reflects the neighbouring tenements and terraced houses, harmonizing with their roof profiles, forms, and overall massing.

Emphasizing the significance of the Central Kirkintilloch Conservation Area, the development showcases high-quality and durable materials such as sandstone. This choice of materials pays homage to the tenement architecture and Victorian buildings that characterize the immediate surroundings. Throughout the design process, our team diligently sought opportunities to salvage and reuse original materials on-site, whenever feasible. This commitment was integral to achieving a satisfactory outcome, garnering approval from all project stakeholders. The original stone from the former school, for instance, was carefully preserved and celebrated as a prominent feature at the entrance of each building. Furthermore, the stonework boundary walls underwent necessary repairs and were seamlessly integrated into the landscaped areas, alongside period cast iron lighting fixtures, which were salvaged and repurposed, effectively diverting them from landfills.
