A gruelling and highly technical groundworks and retention phase on a steep woodland site — massive excavation, structural retaining walls and careful terrain integration setting the foundation for the timber frame now emerging through the trees.

Huge congratulations to our clients and Scott on reaching the final of Scotland's Home of the Year with their home in Kilmacolm.

Described by the judges as “an absolute exemplar of a perfectly designed home,” the project quietly draws on Japanese influences — from the deep overhanging eaves and restrained material palette to the folded, origami-inspired roof form.

The design carefully interweaves old and new spaces, maximising every inch of the site to create a home that feels far larger and more connected than its footprint suggests. Calm, light-filled, and highly functional modern family living.

Something a bit different today. I competed at the British BJJ Open at the weekend and was delighted to take 1st place in my category! ( masters white lightweight)

As Architect and Director of Axn ...Studying striking and grappling martial arts I see a strong and direct comparison with Architecture +design and martial arts.

Simplicity, efficiency, value, risk and expression form the response to each unique situation. In both fields we cannot predetermine any outcomes and must trust our instincts, skill ( learnings) and process.

In both fields skill acquisition is a slow process of learning and refinement. Nothing is wasted ..we always win or learn.

A recent visit to my old stomping ground of Dundee. Taking in Frank Gehry's Maggie's respite care centre, I was taken back to my time working in the Executive Architects office and printing the design drawings for this.

It's simultaneously Scottish, international, domestic, plain and exotic. Inspired by Castles, and cottages, the building sits proudly overlooking the Silvery Tay offering dignified respite for Cancer treatment patients.

It's a wonderful example of ambition wrapped in restraint. Loved it.
