BARD ailteir

BARD ailteir BARD's exploratory and experimental approach delivers projects with an emphasis on depth of meaning and purpose. BARD Ailteir promotes appropriate innovation.

BARD Ailteir works on a range of architectural and arts commissions. Our model places an emphasis on process - promoting enquiry, research and ambition with clients firmly positioned as part of this extended conversation. BARD Ailteir brings together an experience of working in international artisan studios, academic teaching coupled with an active concern for arts, heritage and theory to produce

intriguing and sometimes surprising results for our clients and partners. We explore each site and programme specifically with a view to exposing potential lines of enquiry to drive forward any given project. Using physical models, collage, watercolour and hand drawings we explore and test our thinking and with form, mass, scale and material in order to compose an architecture imbued with depth of meaning. We have experimented in new digital fabrication techniques to find cost-effective solutions to our client’s aspirations.

Ionad Eilean na h-Òige: Phase 2 Update

The timber frames are now largely up and the wellbeing suites are beginning to take shape on site in Eriskay. Several of the Douglas fir rafters are in place too, projecting out to form external canopies over entrances and framing views to Ben Scrien.

These moments in a build are some of the most exciting. Something that has lived on paper and in conversation for months suddenly starts to take on a life of its own.

Our monthly visits are key to this. They give space for technical reviews, detail discussions and checking in with the client, contractors and consultants as the project moves forward. They’re made all the better when the weather is kind, with a cold breeze softened by clear skies from sunrise to sunset.

The excellent exhibition “Enric Miralles: Creating The Scottish Parliament, and other stories by Benedetta Tagliabue and EMBT” curated by and created by and closes today. It’s been incredible to study previously unseen material and gain new insights to one of the most incredible architectural achievements of modern times. We are fortunate to have great friends in .enricmiralles and look forward to the next stories told around this great building.
A key highlight is seeing a photo of Enric Miralles and another friend Andy Macmillan, along with Benedetta Tagliabue and Joan Callís all standing in the gallery / museum of the currently lost Glasgow School of Art by Mackintosh - another favourite building. Go see the exhibition - and the Parliament! Parliament

We have a new project underway in Bellanoch!

Yesterday we were on site surveying the C-listed former Church of Scotland which is set on a hill over the village with expansive views towards Kilmartin Glen.

Looking forward to seeing how this one develops.

The 2025 Scottish Design Awards have ushered in a new golden age for architecture and design in Scotland, with a record number of entries and a celebratory atmosphere across the industry.

Our Practice Director, Ruairidh, was among the night’s most celebrated recipients, having been awarded Young Architect of the Year 2025 following high praise from the architecture judging panel.

“The fact that he has established his practice is to be commended. He has done a lot under his own steam without the benefit of a larger organisation. He has given a lot of time to teaching, mentoring and other activities.”

Speaking after the ceremony, Ruairidh said:

“I’m truly grateful and deeply touched to be named Young Architect of the Year - especially in the company of such outstanding nominees.

While awards often celebrate a single project, this recognition feels especially meaningful as it reflects the early stages of what has already been a varied and rewarding career. I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by supportive family and friends, inspiring mentors, colleagues, clients and exceptionally talented collaborators, all of whom I think of as I accept this award.

The entire team at BARD, past and present, deserve recognition for everything we’ve achieved together. It’s a real joy to share this vocation with others who are just as passionate about architecture, and to pass on what I’ve learned to like-minded individuals.

A heartfelt thank you to the judges and the Scottish Design Awards - this recognition means the world.“

Progress continues at Ionad Eilean na h-Òige following the recent limecrete floor laying in the space that will become a future museum. This is an important step in repurposing the former Eriskay School and delivering the wider masterplan.
