Thinking about adding a garden cabin but worried about planning permission? 🤔

This is one of the most common questions we get.

The good news is that many garden buildings can be installed under permitted development rights, but there are some important rules around:

✅ Building height
✅ Distance from boundaries
✅ How much garden can be built on
✅ Intended use of the building

One thing many people don't realise is that if you're looking at a residential annexe, commercial use, or adding facilities such as a bathroom or kitchen, planning permission is often required.

One of the things we cover during our free site visits is whether a cabin is likely to fall under permitted development, along with things like positioning, height restrictions, access and foundation requirements. It often helps customers avoid costly mistakes before they commit to a design.

What actually happens during a site visit? 👀

A lot more than most people think.

For this upcoming Douglas Men's Shed project, our visit involved:

🔍 Checking for underground services

📏 Marking out the building footprint

⛏️ Digging a trial hole for engineering checks

🚚 Assessing delivery and site access

☕ And of course, discussing the vision with the client

All of this happens before a single foundation goes into the ground.

Good planning helps avoid problems later and ensures the finished building is exactly what the customer needs.

We're incredibly excited to be involved in this project, which will create a fantastic community space including workshops, arts and crafts areas, kitchen facilities and a large social space for local people to enjoy.

We'll be sharing updates throughout the journey, so follow along to see how this 18m x 8m community building comes to life 🔨

Today we're out in Douglas carrying out a site visit for a brand new Men's Shed project.

The vision is to create a welcoming community space where people can come together, learn new skills, work on projects, enjoy arts and crafts, share a cup of tea and build friendships.

The finished building will include workshop space, community areas, kitchen facilities and much more.

It's the type of project that can make a real difference to a local community, and we're proud to be playing a part in bringing it to life.

We'll be sharing updates throughout the entire journey, from planning and foundations right through to the finished building, so follow along if you'd like to see how a project of this scale comes together 🔨

Another visit to Radix HQ — but this time it was to collect our new machine 👀

As demand for ground screw foundations continues to grow, we’ve decided to invest in upgraded equipment that allows us to take on larger and more complex projects.

Foundations are one of the most important parts of any build, so having the right equipment, and the right partners, matters.

We’ll also be using Radix’s new extendable range on an upcoming project, so keep an eye out for that 👀

Another custom build completed 👀

This one was a bespoke Harris 4m x 5m built as the perfect family entertainment space, designed around how the space would be used.

One of the things we enjoy most is seeing a blank area transform into somewhere families can genuinely enjoy spending time together.

Really grateful to have such a brilliant group of people around Clever Built Cabins.

Today was all about looking at how we continue improving what we do, from customer experience and communication, right through to the quality of the builds themselves.

A lot of people only ever see the finished cabin, but there’s a huge amount of work behind the scenes from people who genuinely care about delivering a great experience for our customers.

Good people, good energy, a few laughs trying to get the “perfect” team photo… and plenty of exciting ideas for what’s ahead 👀
