Big development for our business today. As our workload continues to build we are now able to take payment by chip and pin and also contactless cards. Up to now all payments have had to be cash or cheque.

No, I'm not the grim reaper but the latest addition to my stock of tools is a small scythe. great for clearing w**ds and cutting grass around pushes. I love these old style tools and the control they give you. Good use of a strimmer often causes less dammage to nearby trees and shubs than a strimmer.

Cant wait to use it.

Yesterday digging beds and wedding in the rain, today renovating and retraining old cooking roses in the sun. Wonder which will be the most pleasant!

Planning your Garden 3

Working with nature and the seasons rather than against them is a key part of creating a healthy flourishing garden. It is a simple thing to say but not so simple in practice.

Most of our garden plants are not native to these shores and climate or have been developed away from their natural and less ornamental wild forms. The w**ds on the other hand......

Apart from many of the w**ds and a few garden plants are gardens are full of plants that are altered from their natural form or away from their natural climate and usually this makes them more susceptible to pests and disease.

Planning your garden has to take this into account. There is a different season for different jobs. This includes the many ones that need to be done in winter, the time when we least want to be outside.

All this sounds like a lot of hard work. In reality a healthy well tended garden is a lot less back breaking than one we are constantly trying to battle with to sort out problems. And a lot more enjoyable!

If you are not sure where to start it is worth taking advice (shameless plug here) or do some research in books or online. What may seem like an impossible task can be broken down into its smaller parts and can be enjoyable and very rewarding.

I know this isn't the next post in my series on planning you garden, but as I have my lunch I couldn't resist saying what a great morning I have had rejuvenating a fruit garden. Yes it has been very hard work bit seeing the harden emerge from the bind w**d, grannie's bonnet, couch grass and overhanging bushed has been inspiring.

Planning your Garden 2

When you have decided how you want to use your garden it is time look at what you already have there and decide what you like and what you don't.

If you haven't already, start a garden journal and take time to look at your garden from all the important places, not forgetting to look through each of your windows. Look for whee the sunny areas and the shady areas are. Check for what blocks your view or hides unsightly things. Look at the plants, which ones you like and which you don't.

In your journal note it all down. You will then be ready to start planning.

A note to remember though is that if the garden is new to you it may well take a year to be able to see everything in the garden as it changes with the seasons. This of course doesn't mean that there isn't lots that can be done before deciding your plan.

In the next post I will be discussing working with nature and the seasons and how this effects the gardening year and your planning.

Planning your garden 1

It might seem too simple to say, but the first question to ask is how do I want to use my garden.

Is it a place for the kid's to kick a ball about in or to ride their bikes. Is it a place to sit down and relax or read a book and recharge the batteries?

Is it a place where you want to grow lots of flowers, or fruit and vegetables? Or do you want a nice place to have BBQs? Or do you simply want a nicer garden?

I have heard many people say how they don't like gardening or are frustrated because their garden doesn't work for them.

So my first tip is to buy a nice notebook, get a drink and go and sit in your garden and to write down your thoughts about what sort of garden you would like.

This will be the start of a garden journal. This journal will then become the start of a blueprint for creating a garden you will love.

Need any help get in touch.

Now's the time to plan for next year!

It might seem a strange thing to say with this summer not quite over, but careful planning now will bring great benefits next summer. When spring arrives it will already be too late for many important jobs to be done. Another season will be lost.

This month I will be doing a number of posts about preparing our gardens so we can enjoy them at their best. I will also be adding a few tips and suggestions. As I do please add your thoughts and comments. Let us see if we can get a few conversations going. My first post will appear later this week.
