Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) continues to pose a serious threat across the South East of England, and with sporadic outbreaks now appearing in other parts of the UK and Ireland, it is becoming an increasingly widespread concern.
OPM caterpillars emerge in spring and can cause significant damage to oak trees. They also present serious health risks to people and pets due to their toxic hairs. Contact with these hairs can lead to skin rashes, conjunctivitis, and respiratory problems.
Now is the time to plan ahead. Early monitoring and timely treatment in March, April, and May are essential to controlling infestations before they become a larger issue.
Bartlett Tree Experts is a leader in the management of Oak Processionary Moth. If you manage or care for oak trees, early action makes all the difference. Spring treatments not only help protect your trees but also reduce associated health risks to people and pets on your property.
Due to the public health risk, the Forestry Commission recommends surveying oak trees to ensure early detection of OPM caterpillars.

National Gardening Day is celebrated every year on 14th April, encouraging people to get gardening and reconnect with nature. Founded in 2018, the day aims to inspire both experienced gardeners and beginners to start planting and enjoy the many benefits gardening brings.
Taking place right in the heart of spring, National Gardening Day is the perfect time to begin growing flowers, vegetables, herbs, and fruit so they’re ready to enjoy in the summer. Even without a garden, you can still get involved by caring for houseplants or using containers, allotments, or community gardens.
Gardening offers so much more than fresh produce. It provides gentle physical exercise, helps reduce stress, supports mental wellbeing, and allows people to spend time outdoors and connect with nature. It’s also a wonderfully social hobby, with gardeners sharing tips and knowledge and growing together within their communities.

How to Celebrate National Gardening Day: -
- Plant something new — flowers, vegetables, or herbs
- Visit a local garden centre for inspiration
- Join or start a gardening group to share ideas and advice
- Learn and share through books, courses, or online resources
- Post on social media, sharing tips and photos to inspire others
- Get children involved with fun gardening activities

Benefits of Gardening: -
- Physical health: Improves movement, strength, and flexibility
- Mental wellbeing: Reduces stress and promotes relaxation
- Environmental benefits: Supports pollinators and local ecosystems
- Social connection: Brings people together through shared activities

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, National Gardening Day is the perfect excuse to dig in, grow something new, and enjoy the rewards!

With spring now upon us, it’s the ideal time to address tree health issues that commonly arise at this time of year. We are already beginning to see concerns such as: -
• Browning of needles on evergreens as well as discolouration and wilting on deciduous trees as leaves emerge
• Damage to twigs and branches
• Cracks or splits in the bark
• Root issues, which may sometimes lead to tree failure
We strongly recommend a Spring visit for all our clients to help maintain optimum tree health and prevent minor issues from becoming major problems.

Happy Spring Equinox!
Today, light and dark stand in perfect balance - a gentle reminder that fresh beginnings often arrive quietly, with longer days, softer skies, and the promise of growth.

The Spring Equinox happens at the specific moment when the Sun is directly above the Earth’s equator, which happens when the Sun is crossing the celestial equator, an imaginary line above the equator, from south to north. This occurs at the same time everywhere in the world; however, the date and time of the Equinox vary from country to country due to the year that it happens in and the time zones.

As we welcome the first day of spring, may this new season bring renewal, clarity, and a little more warmth to everything you’re working toward 💛
