🌿 "What is this red gum oozing from my eucalyptus?"

This striking dark red or burgundy resin is a kino, a type of gum exuded by many eucalyptus species (including Eucalyptus stellulata, also known as Black Sallee, pictured here). Kino is rich in tannins and has been used traditionally for a variety of purposes.

🧪 Why does it happen?
Kino is usually produced when the tree is wounded - from insects, frost cracks, or mechanical damage. It acts like a natural antiseptic bandage, helping to seal the wound and protect against infection or pests.

🪶 Did you know?
The name kino comes from an early name for plant gums used medicinally.

Aboriginal Australians used eucalyptus kino for its astringent and antimicrobial properties; for wounds, sore throats, and diarrhoea.

Some gums from eucalyptus trees were also chewed like a natural chewing gum.

📸 Seen it in your garden?
Spotting kino can be a sign of stress or damage, but small amounts are often nothing to worry about. Think of it as the tree’s version of a scab - sealing, healing, and protecting.

Can you spot today’s visitor? 🐜👀

These ants are harvesting nectar from the buds of Eucalyptus kitsoniana, a striking species known for its smooth bark and glaucous foliage. Ants might not be pollinators like our beloved bees and butterflies, but they do play a role in protecting the plant by warding off herbivorous insects in exchange for that sweet treat.

Nature’s teamwork in action 💚 keep your eyes peeled for who else might be stopping by!

🦎🌿 World Crocodile Day: What Do Crocs and Eucalyptus Have in Common? 🌿🦎

Today’s not just any Tuesday… it’s World Crocodile Day, a chance to celebrate these ancient reptiles and raise awareness about protecting their natural habitats.

But what’s that got to do with us at Hardy Eucalyptus?

🔍 Look closely: croc scales and eucalyptus both tell a story of survival.
From the ridged bark of our trees to the leathery, water-shedding leaves, eucalyptus has evolved to thrive in tough environments - just like crocodiles. Their textured armour, our trees’ layered bark... both are nature’s way of adapting and enduring.

🌿 Eucalyptus = Habitat Heroes
In parts of the world, eucalyptus trees help provide shade and cover in wetland ecosystems; the very kind of environment crocodiles call home. While our trees are mostly grown here in the UK, they remind us how vital trees are in maintaining all kinds of habitats, from swamps to savannahs.

🐊 And while we don’t have crocs in our nursery (phew!), we do believe in biodiversity and supporting plantings that make a difference; for people, pollinators, and the planet.

So today, we’re giving a nod to the crocs - and to the mighty eucalyptus for their role in supporting the wild world 🌎💚
