The wait is over!

The Little ‘Lot blooms back to life from today. Join us as we kick off a season of growth and greenery. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or new to our patch, there’s something special about planting seeds of change together.

In our first two sessions, we’ll focus on enriching the soil with natural nutrients like eggshells that will help to decompose and balance acidity. We’ll also sow onion, tomato, and blackberry seeds! And of course, we’ll tackle weeding to keep our patch pristine.

Join us for a season of discovery as we dive into soil testing and many more exciting activities.

With over 50+ species of plant at The Little ‘Lot, we thought we'd introduce you to some of our favourites with a series of plant profiles to enjoy over the coming months.

Common name: Mediterranean spurge
Botanical name: Euphorbia characias

Height: 1.2m
When to see: Spring to early summer

Always wear gloves when handling! This plant is easily recognised by bottle-brush shaped clusters of cyathia with yellow-green bracts and dark brown nectar glands. Whilst pretty to look at, this striking plant produces a white milky sap - latex - when damaged, which can be a skin irritant and very harmful if ingested! Despite its toxicity, spurge has uses in traditional folk medicine. Euphorbia comprises some 2300 species, so it’s quite a family!

We had a plant-astic time at The Little ‘Lot last Friday!

Our team of volunteers harvested the first round of produce, which included spinach, purple kohlrabi, strawberries and an assortment of herbs!

With sustainability at the heart of everything we do, our security team made use of the estate's electric vehicle to drop the produce off at Back on Track Manchester's in-house café. The produce will be turned into a variety of nutritious dishes for the people who use the centre to enjoy.

This is the first of many harvests to come, with potatoes, beetroot, cabbage and broad beans next on the agenda to harvest!

It's never too late to join in at The Little ‘Lot. We run sessions every Friday from 12pm - 2pm.

Now that spring has arrived, we’re on the look out for volunteers to help look after our community allotment, which is fondly named The Little ‘Lot.

Nestled in Hardman Square, the site grows an assortment of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers year-round, including broad beans, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbages and onions, to name a few!

The sessions are entirely volunteer led. All volunteers will have access to gloves and equipment, with lunchtime sessions available every Friday (apart from 15 April) from 12 – 2pm for green-fingered enthusiasts to pop by and pitch in however much or little as they wish throughout spring and summer.

We advise volunteers wear suitable clothing, including closed toe shoes, long trousers and a sunhat.

To take part, please email [email protected].
