Please don't leave your pumpkins out for the hedgehogs 🦔

Did you know that pumpkins cause hedgehogs to have serious diarrhoea and dehydration?

At this time of year it is vital that hedgehogs put on as much weight as possible to give them the best chance of surviving winter and hibernation.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society suggest hanging discarded pumpkins in trees to allow birds and squirrels to eat the fruit.

At 2AM on October 31st we revert to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). But when did this practice begin, and why?

British Summer Time was the brainchild of a builder from Kent called William Willett.

In the 1900’s clocks were always set to Greenwich Mean Time. It was light by 3am and dark around 9pm in the summer.

William wanted to adapt the time to better fit daylight hours throughout the summer.

Through his leaflet “The Waste of Daylight”, Willett got the support of the MP Robert Pearce who advocated the idea, albeit unsuccessfully, in the House of Commons.

The idea resurfaced during WWI with need to conserve coal, making daylight saving more pertinent.

The Summer Time Act was finally passed in the UK on 17th May 1916.

Sadly, William died in 1915, aged 58 and never lived to see his daylight-saving ideas become law.

Our poor fabricators are not afforded the same luxury in the factory, with the doors wide open for forklifts coming in and out, whatever the weather.

The wool hats are already making an appearance.
