The main borders at Fernhill Castle always look their best in late summer in my opinion. While it’s a constant battle to get things to flower before the deer notice them, the borders always put on a good show!

First harvest this year from my own kitchen garden/allotment here in Skipton.

I try to grow a variety of things but this year it’s going to be mostly tomatoes and potatoes I think!

The broad beans have been overwintered and survived the terrible snow so I’d highly recommend the variety except the label didn’t fare so well 🤣

The radish is ‘French Breakfast’ which isn’t a variety I’ve grown before so looking forward to the tasting! 🫛🥕🌶️

Todays progress on creating this large flower border in Earby. The idea is to create an all seasons border, with both structure and flowers to provide interest year-round. Lifting the turf by hand is a big job, but will be worth it when it’s all completed!

Been a busy day getting things sorted for the allotment! Planted our potato crop for this year. My grandad swore by planting his spuds after St Patrick’s Day so following his advice on planting time!

We’ve gone for Swift, Charlotte, Desiree, and Picasso this year.

Also been on with some seed sowing including a mix of different sunflowers to liven up the veg beds this year. Varieties include ‘Copper Queen’, ‘Giant Single’ and ‘Infrared’.

Gave my first professional talk and gardening demo tonight. Great fun talking about the ‘lasagna’ bulb planting method, and general info about bulb planting. Was able to bust some myths, and give some information about wider gardening too. I also created a winter/early spring interest plant suggestion list for the attendees.
