"Lawns and turf benefit from attention from mid-September. Lawns take a terrible battering all summer and when the autumn rains return to soften the soil there is an opportunity to boost them for the winter so they grow well in the spring. Improving the root environment can be done by spiking to let in air and water and remove compaction. This is followed by raking in sandy top dressing and potassium rich autumn fertiliser and finally by over-seeding mulch. Overseeding is raking in new grass seed, which will germinate and thicken swards. The mild moist autumn weather will allow grass seed to germinate without the intense watering needed by summer overseeding."
