Weekend inspiration at Bodnant Gardens, Colwyn Bay - Wales 🌿✨
The vivid yellow Laburnum Arch was an incredible sight, paired beautifully with the stunning rose gardens in full bloom. So much natural colour, texture, and inspiration all in one place.

It’s been full on for us recently, which is why things have gone a bit quiet on here! 🌱

We’ve been out transforming gardens and making sure everything is looking the best and well maintained for our customers. Here’s a few snapshots of what we’ve been up to lately!

🍂 Before & After – Leaf Clearance & Garden Maintenance 🍂

These photos are from a leaf clearance job plus a maintenance slot, but it’s a good example of how both regular maintenance and one-off garden jobs can make a big difference.

Clearing leaves and borders isn’t just about making things look tidy. It helps protect lawns from rotting, keeps paths safer underfoot, improves drainage, and makes ongoing maintenance much easier through the winter months.

Jobs like this also set the garden up properly for the year ahead. Heading towards spring, now is a great time to get on top of overgrown areas, clear beds, cut back where needed and in general, to get gardens ready so everything can come back stronger when the warmer weather arrives.

A bit of work at the right time means healthier plants, better growth and a much nicer display once everything starts to bloom.

🌷Wisteria pruning - when and how to get a better bloom ✂️

Wisteria looks amazing when it’s done right, but poor pruning encourages leaf growth at the expense of those beautiful flowers.

As a general rule, Wisteria needs pruning twice a year:

Summer (July–August)
After it’s finished flowering, cut back the long, wispy growth to around 5–6 leaves. This keeps it under control and helps the plant focus on producing flower buds.

Winter (January–February)
Once it’s dormant, cut those same shoots back again to 2–3 buds. This helps set it up for a better display the following spring.

🌱 Why does pruning matter..?
• Encourages more flowers
• Stops it taking over walls, fences and gutters
• Keeps it neater, healthier and easier to manage

A couple of things to keep in mind..
– Too much feed = lots of leaf, not many flowers
– Full sun gives the best results
– Young Wisteria can take a few years to really get going

If yours is getting out of hand or hasn’t flowered properly, it usually just needs the right cut at the right time...which happens to be right now!

We’ve been keeping busy at SM Landscapes! Here are a couple of snaps from recent jobs, one of the fields we regularly maintain, and a climber we carefully reduced back from a roof to keep the building protected and tidy. More hedging jobs on the way and plenty of gardens to maintain as we prepare for autumn which is just around the corner!
