Small job is still a job!

Old, brittle plastic corrugated swapped for shiny, new galvanised roof on workshop.

Plus an additional 3 bags of vegetation removed from between the rafters. :)

there are chimneys.
there are chimneys with cracked pointing.
there are chimneys with broken pointing.
there are chimneys with cracked bricks, broken bricks, missing bricks...
..and then there's this chimney...
..the "oh for Pete's sake" chimney.

but we fixed it.
and we sealed it.
and the rest we cleaned.
and some other things we cleared.
we scraped, we raked, we filled, we spilled, we swept, we wept.

and then we went home.
not to the pub as after this job we were a bit like this chimney before the job.....a bit cracked, a bit knackered, a bit broken.

:)

a small job's still a job.

whoever erected this conservatory, had no idea about water, building materials and their relation to each other.

the roof ended up too high to allow for the gutter to be installed in a fashion that the overhang of the roof felt directs the water into it so instead they put a few blobs of silicone between roof and gutter, tacked it to the felt from the front and put some more silicone between the edge of the gutter and the felt.

under the gutter, a nice flashing tape should've done the job of sealing but since water had been creeping back in under the gutter (the incline is rather small) mighty vegetation has settled and flourished, helping in the deterioration of the tape.

also the seal between the felt and the gutter hasn't lasted too long as the plastic gutter flexes with changes in temperature, incoming water had been pooling in there for yonks allowing the fascia board and the soffit to rot and subsequently allowing water ingress into the conservatory.

after removing EVERYTHING including dead wood, we installed a new flashing of gutter sealant and roof felt tacked to felt of the house to be held in position until sealant cures.

we'll be back in a few weeks time to coat over with some more bitumen to allow for the whole thing to fuse into one nice impenetrable seal.

and now it's all dry inside.

The very reason why people are wary of builders, especially roofers. 😞Totally criminal. :(

“The mural of gutterfitters past.”

There’s this house that has a damp wall. Damp all the way from top to bottom.
Owner says it’s been like that for millennia.

Obviously.

The original cast iron gutters that come with the place were not much use. Mainly because the overhang of the tiles were practically zero and then there was the failing joint in the middle plus the lush foliage residing in it.

That big, dark vertical patch in the middle is no shadow, it is water damage. Damage that’s been persistent since the building has a roof on.

Luckily the tiles did overlap each other by quite a bit (making you wonder why it could have not been done correctly in the first place) so by repositioning the two bottom rows (new battens, reducing overlap), we could gain on the overhang so that water can now actually flow into the gutter instead of onto the wall.

Whilst you’re up there, you might as well put new fascia on and understandably swap the iron ones for plastic. Plus the downpipe. And fill the cracks and holes and blemishes etc etc etc

Voilá!

Damp problem solved. It isn’t always rising damp. Sometimes it’s a sinking one.

Got a decent pile for the scrappy, too.

I offered to paint the whole wall black, to get rid of the mark but i was told it is a mural.

A mural of gutterfitters past.
