Succulent leaves which I left lying around for the past couple of months. They've now been scooped up and put in an olive bowl, which fit on a narrow window ledge, to grow on and make presents for Christmas 2014.

I grew each of these succulents from single leaves that were broken off the main stem of a larger plants. All you need to do is break off a reasonably sized leaf and place it on the soil. The growth cells at the base of the leaf then multiply and become new roots and leaves, or in other words a new plant. You only find growth cells right at the base of a leaf though, so you have to make the break right at the point where a leaf joins the stem. I’ve planted them up in an old Christmas candle holder and put a layer of black stone chippings (from an aquarium shop) around the base.

First experiments with old teapots n chocolate pot. Old teapots seem to work nicely as hanging baskets (suspended by spout and handle), the chocolate pot has a high handle so can be suspended directly from that. Next time I’d probably plant up with lighter succulents in the dark pot or maybe even some geraniums. Then use darker succulents in the white pot and try different shaped leaves.

This was a £2 old ceramic vase from a junk shop, with the addition of different succulents - an exercise in messing around to find different shapes and shades of green that would work with the colour of the pot and the shape of the edges. The basic rule is to add a range of bits ( some to thrill, some to fill and some to spill ). :-)

I'm familiarising myself with how my Plant Stuff page works, messing about with different coloured gravel to see how it will offset different plants - then thinking about which can be combined with a range of recycled ceramic containers. :-)

Spring is sprung and I've got those planting urges. This is a first attempt to add variety to a green bowl and matching saucer I found in a junk shop last year. Strangely the bowl seems to have been made with loads of holes in the bottom, almost waiting for me to fill with different varieties of succulents. On further investigation it turns out they're posh fruit bowls that you can use to display a central platter of washed fruit and let the water to drain through (though not when you've filled them with mud and cactus cuttings ;-)

This is Nigel the aeonium. I bought him about a year ago. he survived the winter and has grown quite well. Enjoys lots of light until about 2 in the afternoon. He has a good soaking, but only once a fortnight even in droughts and heatwaves. Worth growing against a light coloured background, which gives extra sunlight, stresses him into growing darker and also adds a nice contrast for viewing :-)
