Don’t forget, gardens need maintenance in January too, so here’s a list of jobs applicable to the time of year. PM me if you need any assistance.
January Gardening Checklist
General Garden
■ Check plants after frost, snow or storms
■ Firm in loosened plants and repair supports
■ Protect tender plants with fleece or mulch
■ Clear paths of moss, algae and wet leaves
■ Clean, sharpen and oil garden tools
■ Wash and sterilise pots and seed trays
■ Plan planting and order seeds
Trees, Shrubs & Roses
■ Plant bare-root trees, shrubs and roses (weather permitting)
■ Prune apple and pear trees
■ Prune roses (shorten long shoots)
■ Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches
■ Check and adjust tree ties and stakes
Flower Garden
■ Cut back herbaceous perennials
■ Divide congested clumps (if soil allows)
■ Lift and store tender bulbs and tubers
■ Check stored bulbs and tubers for rot
Vegetable Patch
■ Dig over empty beds and leave soil rough
■ Add compost or well-rotted manure
■ Sow broad beans under cover
■ Chit seed potatoes
■ Harvest leeks, parsnips and sprouts
■ Net brassicas against birds
Greenhouse & Indoors
■ Insulate greenhouse with bubble wrap
■ Ventilate on mild days
■ Water sparingly
■ Clean greenhouse glass
■ Check heaters and thermostats
Wildlife Care
■ Feed birds and clean feeders
■ Keep bird baths and ponds ice-free
■ Leave seed heads and leaf piles for inse
