I am David Jowle - a reliable, punctual and tidy handyman with strong attention to detail and great communication skills. Although my main focus is on garden landscaping and painting & decorating, I'm open to a variety of work. I enjoy being on my feet, have a practical mind and love working with my hands. Before setting up the business in 2023, I spent 20+ years working in different roles in educ

ation, the last 10 of which were doing communications and marketing in academy trusts and higher education.

Where to start with this one...

Flags had been laid upside down, correct faces ruined by cement stains, pointing gaps that could be seen from space (literally), spot-bedding in places, and edging that was unsafe.

The customer wanted to make the area safe, tighten up the paving and limit waste. So, with some careful stone work and lots of patience in all weather, we created a new coping style perimeter and re-laid the main patio area as stage 1 of a 3 stage project.

A big thank you to Ben Howarth from Innoscape for teaching me paving over the last couple of years and joining me at the beginning and end of this project.

I'll be returning in spring to finish the steps and adjoining path.

2 YEARS!

I had planned to mark today with a nice video reflecting on the last couple of years since I started the business. But, with schools shutting for summer, a short break with family imminent and the weather making work extremely busy, I've just not had the time, and that is completely fine.

I spent my 2 year anniversary working on this crazy paving with Ben Howarth from Innoscape. Ben isn't on socials, but I owe him a lot for taking me under his wing and all he's taught me. If you want beautiful, high-end, bespoke landscaping design /builds, he's your man (and there's a decent chance you'll get me too).

This path isn’t quite finished yet, but like me, it's a work in progress. Thanks to all my customers, family and friends for your support. Here's to many more years spent learning, improving, and enjoying my job.

I've learned so much about painting over the last 2 years, so it was time to try something new and test myself at home. It went pretty well, and Mrs J is happy with our new hallway.

I'm taking bookings now for painting and decorating through autumn / winter.

This one needed fair weather and a head for heights! We got both.

These windows were drafty, starting to rot in places, paint had failed, sealant cracked and some pointing damaged on the surrounds. Another winter or two and this would have been a much bigger job.

βœ…οΈ Sealant painstakingly removed, gaps back filled with expanding foam to reduce draft.

βœ…οΈ Pointing repaired with colour matched mortar.

βœ…οΈ Windows sanded and repaired before painting using Dulux Decorator Centre Trade Weathershield Exterior undercoat and satin system (China White).

βœ…οΈ All finished using traditional trowel mastic to seal everything and blend in nicely with the lime mortar.

I'm back working with Innoscape this week for a repeat customer.

Ben had an idea for some custom fencing, mixing traditional hazel hurdles with tanalized mitred frames and posts.

I worked with these hurdles on one of my own projects last year. They are so versatile and beautiful, allowing wind and light through whilst providing privacy and shelter.

Really happy with how this turned out.

I really enjoyed this one - putting lots of the new skills I've learned into practice.

The render had gone on this section of the wall, which was also cracking underneath and missing its copings.

In a functional area of the garden, the customer wanted a simple, cost-effective solution.

With some nice stone knocking about the garden, we decided to use what we had and blend it into the surrounding rendered wall. Fresh copings cut from some old paving flags to match the adjoining ones and job done.

Another happy customer and some more time spent working outdoors reminding me why I love this job so much.

If you told me 18 months ago that I would have just helped create this, I would have looked at you funnily.

Working with Ben and Matthew at Innoscape has brought me a long way in a short period. This was a really ambitious project that pushed us to the limit at times, but what a thing! Delighted with the result, proud to have been involved and lucky to have worked for some of the loveliest, most caring customers.

Ben (right) is a craftsman and an artist, and Matthew (centre) is a great co-worker with unbelievable strength. Both are becoming great friends of mine. Now, onto the next one.

1 year old!

It's hard to comprehend how much life can change. 18 months ago, I was low on confidence, grieving for a friend and feeling a bit lost. With the support of my family, friends and colleagues I got help, talked a lot, had time to think and made some decisions about the future.

12 months ago, I launched DJJ Handyman Services and I've never looked back. Although it hasn't always been plain sailing, I've learned so much and am enjoying my work.

Thanks to everyone who helped me through the difficult times and all the customers I've worked for since I took the step into self employment.

Special mentions for Jenny Jowle for being there and putting up with me, and to the Innoscape brothers - Ben Howarth for putting faith in me when I really needed it and Matthew Pearce for all the support.

Finally, there is no shame in admitting when things aren't going well. Honesty is the best policy and I know from experience that problems are better shared. Change can happen, however far it might seem from being a reality - I'm not special, but I'm proof of what can happen when you put your mind to something.

After repairing and levelling the wall top recently, I installed a willow hurdle fence to give the customer some privacy. The hurdles are great - perfect for editing to fit uneven edges and a beautifully natural product.

Customer happy and I'm excited to move onto the next stage of this project.
