FAQ of the Month: ‘What preparation is needed from me before you arrive?’

The good news is, we do not need you to do anything dramatic before we arrive.

Once the room is clear, we just need a few good plug points for our machines, easy access to the room we are working in, and somewhere suitable to park close to the property.

Unless we have agreed to split the work into sections, we will normally work on all the quoted floors at the same time. If parking permits are needed, then please help arrange these where possible so we can get set up smoothly.

A little preparation before we arrive helps the whole restoration process run that much smoother.

Some floors want to look natural, others need a bit more armour 🛡️

An oiled finish soaks into the timber and keeps more of that natural grain and character on show. A lacquered finish sits over the top and creates a protective layer, which can be a good shout for hallways, kitchens, public areas and other high traffic zones.

The tricky bit is knowing which one actually suits your floor and needs, rather than just picking the one that sounds nicest.

In our latest blog, we explain how both finishes work, where each one makes sense, and what to think about before restoring your wood floor.

Oil or lacquer to finish up your fresh wood flooring? 🪵

Oil gives you that more natural, textured finish where the grain really does its thing. Lacquer gives you a sealed surface that is often easier to clean and can work well in busier areas of the home or on public sites.

Neither is the “right” answer for every floor. It depends on the timber, the room, the wear and tear, and how much maintenance you realistically want, or have the time, to do.

We’ve broken down the real differences in our latest blog, so you can make a better call before your floor is restored.

Just because the floor is fading, doesn’t mean it has to fade out 🪵

The lighter or darker patches are usually caused by years of sunlight, foot traffic and furniture coverage all working at different speeds. One part of the floor has been living its life, while the other has been tucked away in the shade.

The good news is that a faded wood floor does not always need replacing. With the right sanding, preparation and finish, we can often bring back a much more even, natural look and protect the timber properly again.

We explain what causes fading and how to revive wood floors in our latest blog.

A faded wood floor can make a whole room feel a bit flat, even when the boards underneath still have plenty to give 💪

Sunlight near windows, worn walkways, old finishes and years of everyday use can all leave timber looking pale, patchy or dull. The trick is knowing whether the fading is only in the finish, or whether the floor needs a deeper restoration process.

In our latest blog, we talk through what causes fading, when sanding is needed, and how the right stain or finish can bring the floor back into the room properly.

Worth a read if your floor has started looking tired rather than characterful.

A stone floor can look clean at first glance, but the grout lines usually know the truth 👀

Before sealing, the surface of a stone floor needs to be properly cleaned, rinsed and prepared. Otherwise, the sealer may protect the stone, but it may also protect the dirt underneath it. Not exactly the dream finish.

Our latest blog breaks down stone floor sealing in 2026, including all the fun details such as pH levels, stone types, grout lines and why the prep work matters just as much as the final finish.

Sealing a stone floor is not quite as simple as “slap some product on it and cross your fingers” 🤞

If dirt, old cleaner or grime is still sitting in the surface or grout lines, sealing can trap the problem underneath.

Which is not ideal… unless you were aiming for permanently protected dirt - in which case, job done.

In our latest blog, we explain how stone floor sealing should actually work, why preparation matters, and how the right sealer helps protect natural stone floors properly.

What actually are encaustic tiles? 🤔

Encaustic tiles are decorative tiles where the pattern is created using coloured material within the tile itself, rather than simply printed on top. They are often found in hallways, period homes, porches and older properties, and they can look incredible when properly cared for.

Over time, they can become dull, stained or coated in old sealers that hide the detail. Stone floor restoration can help carefully clean, protect and revive encaustic tiles without losing their character.

They are not just “old tiles”. They are part of the room’s personality, and they can be preserved and brought back to life just like wood can.

Moved the sofa and found a completely different floor underneath? 🪑

This is more common than people think. Furniture, rugs and cabinets can block sunlight and foot traffic, which means the exposed parts of the floor age differently to the covered areas.

That patchy look is usually a mix of light exposure, worn finish and uneven use. With the right restoration process, we can sand the surface back, even out the appearance and apply a finish that helps the whole floor feel more consistent again.

Those who want to change up the lounge for 2026, this one is for you.

Ever noticed your wooden floor looking a little pale near the windows? 👀

Sunlight can slowly bleach timber over time, especially in rooms with big windows, patio doors or lots of natural light. You might notice faded patches, lighter boards or a colour difference where the sun hits the same spot every day.

The good news is that sun bleached wooden floors can often be restored. With some careful sanding, colour matching, staining where needed and a fresh finish, we can help bring the floor back to a more balanced, natural look.
