⚠️ Gas Leak – Do You Know What To Do?

A quick but important reminder for homeowners…

If you ever smell gas in your home, it’s important to act quickly and safely.

🚨 What to do immediately

• Turn off the gas supply at the meter (if it’s safe to do so)
• Open doors and windows to ventilate the property
• Avoid using electrical switches, plugs, or naked flames
• Get everyone out of the property

📞 Call the National Gas Emergency number: 0800 111 999

They are available 24/7 and will attend to make the situation safe.

❗ **Do NOT:**
• Turn lights on or off
• Use mobile phones inside the property
• Try to fix the issue yourself

Once the emergency services have made everything safe, a Gas Safe registered engineer can then carry out any necessary repairs.

It’s something you hopefully never need — but knowing what to do can make a big difference.

Stay safe 👍

💡 Something we see all the time in homes…

People putting up with heating issues for months because
“it’s still working… just not very well.”

Things like:

• Radiators taking ages to warm up
• One room always colder than the others
• Boiler making odd noises
• Hot water not as strong as it used to be

Because it’s not a full breakdown, it just gets ignored.

But in most cases, these are early warning signs that something in the system isn’t quite right.

What often starts as a small issue can turn into a bigger (and more expensive) problem if left too long.

The good news is — a lot of these problems are straightforward to sort when caught early.

If your heating hasn’t felt “quite right” for a while, it’s probably worth getting it checked.

We are your local gas engineers based in Hemel Hempstead, covering Hertfordshire — and always happy to offer honest advice 👍

❄️ One of the biggest heating mistakes we see every year…

People turning their heating completely OFF as soon as the weather improves.

It sounds sensible — but it can actually lead to problems later on.

Over time, we start to see:

• Seized pumps
• Sticking valves
• Sludge settling in the system
• Boilers struggling when they’re switched back on

Your heating system still benefits from being run occasionally, even in the warmer months.

Think of it like a car — leaving it unused for months isn’t always the best idea.

Even just putting your heating on for 10–15 minutes every couple of weeks can help keep everything moving and reduce the chances of issues later in the year.

Small habits = fewer breakdowns 👍

If you’re not sure your system is running as it should, feel free to message me — always happy to help.

Quick question for homeowners…

Do you know where your main water stopcock is???

It’s something most people don’t think about — until there’s a leak or a burst pipe and water is going everywhere.

Your stopcock is what allows you to shut off the water supply to your home in an emergency, and knowing where it is can save a lot of damage and stress.

In most homes it’s usually found:
• Under the kitchen sink
• In a cupboard near the front door
• Under the stairs
• In a utility room
• Sometimes near where the water pipe enters the property

If you’ve recently moved house, it’s definitely worth taking a couple of minutes to locate it and check that it actually turns.

If you’re not sure where yours is, feel free to ask — I’m always happy to help point people in the right direction.

We have just noticed that TDP Heating Solutions has now reached 100 Google reviews, which is a fantastic milestone for a local independent business.

We are really grateful to everyone who has taken the time to leave feedback after I’ve carried out work in their home. Whether it’s a boiler installation, service, repair or heating advice, your reviews genuinely help other people feel confident choosing a local engineer.

We’ve also been lucky enough to receive great feedback across Facebook, Trustpilot and our website, but reaching 100 reviews on Google is a big one because it really helps local businesses like mine get seen by more homeowners across Hemel Hempstead and Hertfordshire.

Most of our work comes through recommendations and word of mouth, so every review means a lot.

A big thank you again to all our customers who have supported TDP Heating Solutions 👍

Most boilers don’t fail in January and February....
They fail right about now.

By late winter your heating system has been working hard for months.

That’s when I start seeing:

• Sludge circulating
• Boilers losing pressure
• Noisy pumps and kettling
• Expansion vessels failing
• Radiators cooler at the bottom

It’s usually the point where customers say:

“It’s been fine all winter… but now it’s playing up.”

Small warning signs now often turn into bigger repairs later if ignored.

If your boiler is:

– Making new noises
– Losing pressure
– Taking longer to heat up
– Not keeping the house as warm
– Hot water inconsistent

It’s worth getting it checked before next winter rather than waiting for a breakdown.

I’m a local gas engineer working across Hertfordshire — happy to offer straightforward advice if something doesn’t feel right.

🔧 Why Adding Inhibitor to Your Central Heating System Is So Important 🔧

Most homeowners don’t realise that the water inside their heating system is constantly reacting with metal components. Over time, this can cause internal corrosion, sludge build-up and debris circulating around the system — often without any obvious signs until performance drops or parts start to fail.

This is where inhibitor comes in.

🛡️ What is inhibitor?
It’s a specially formulated chemical added to your heating system water to prevent corrosion and internal damage.

✅ The Benefits of Adding Inhibitor:

1️⃣ Protects Your Boiler
Corrosion and sludge can damage key components like the heat exchanger and pump. Inhibitor helps prevent costly breakdowns.

2️⃣ Improves Efficiency
Sludge build-up reduces heat transfer. A clean system heats up faster and uses less energy.

3️⃣ Extends System Lifespan
Radiators, pipework and valves stay protected internally.

4️⃣ Helps Maintain Boiler Warranty
Many manufacturers require inhibitor to be present in the system.

5️⃣ Reduces Cold Spots in Radiators
Sludge often causes cold patches at the bottom of radiators — inhibitor helps prevent this forming.

If your system hasn’t been checked recently, it may be worth testing inhibitor levels to ensure it’s still offering protection.

🌡️ Are You Using Your Thermostat Efficiently? 🌡️

Your thermostat plays a huge role in how much energy your heating system uses, but many homes aren’t getting the best out of it.

A few simple tips can help reduce energy use without sacrificing comfort:

✅ Set your thermostat to a steady temperature rather than constantly turning it up and down
✅ Avoid turning it up high to “heat the house quicker” — it doesn’t work that way
✅ Lower the temperature slightly at night or when the house is empty
✅ Consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat for better control

Small adjustments can lead to noticeable savings over the winter months.

If you’re unsure whether your current controls are set up correctly, we’re happy to advise or upgrade your system.

🔥 Radiators Not Heating Evenly? It Could Be the Lockshield Valve 🔥

If some radiators heat up quickly while others stay lukewarm or cold, your heating system may be out of balance.

When balancing radiators, it’s important to know that it’s the lockshield valve that is adjusted — not the TRV.

🔧 What’s the difference?

TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valve):
Controls the room temperature and is adjusted by the homeowner.

Lockshield valve:
Usually hidden under a plastic cap on the other side of the radiator. This controls how much hot water flows through the radiator and is what’s adjusted to balance the system.

If the lockshields aren’t set correctly, some radiators can steal all the heat, leaving others underperforming and pushing energy bills up.

Balancing your system helps:
✅ Even heat throughout the home
✅ Faster warm-up times
✅ Better efficiency
✅ Lower running costs

Balancing is best carried out by a heating engineer as part of a service or system check.

⚠️ Low Boiler Pressure? Don’t Ignore It ⚠️

If your heating or hot water has stopped working, low boiler pressure could be the reason — especially during colder weather.

Most boilers work best when the pressure is around 1.0–1.5 bar when cold.
If it drops too low, the boiler may shut down to protect itself.

🔍 Common signs of low pressure:

Boiler fault code or warning light

No heating or hot water

Radiators not warming up properly

🔧 What causes pressure to drop?

Small leaks in the system

Recently bled radiators

Normal wear over time

Some boilers allow homeowners to top up the pressure using a filling loop, but if the pressure keeps dropping, it’s best to get it checked properly.

💷 Simple Heating Tip to Save Money This Winter 💷

If there’s a room in your home that you’re not using regularly, a simple way to reduce heating costs is to close the door and turn the radiator down to a very low setting rather than turning it off completely.

Why this works 👇
✅ Keeps a low level of background heat
✅ Helps prevent damp and condensation
✅ Reduces wasted energy heating unused space
✅ Maintains balance in your heating system

If your radiators have TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves), set unused rooms to a low setting (usually 1 or frost protection) and keep doors closed.

⚠️ Turning radiators off entirely can sometimes cause cold spots and damp issues, especially in winter.

Small changes like this can make a real difference to your energy bills over time.
