What if your home could support wildlife, reduce your energy bills, and look stunning, all at the same time?

Green roofs and living walls do exactly that. As part of our commitment to sustainable residential design, we integrate planting into the architecture itself: sedum roofs that flower through summer, living walls that insulate, absorb rainwater, and bring a vertical garden right to your door.

Beyond the visual impact, the practical benefits are significant:

• Better insulation and reduced heating costs
• Natural stormwater management
• Increased biodiversity and pollinator habitat
• Improved air quality and acoustic performance
• A measurable boost to mental wellbeing

These images are from two of our projects: a sedum green roof and a bespoke living wall, both designed as integral parts of the architecture rather than afterthoughts.

If you're thinking about a new home, extension, or garden building and want sustainability to be at its heart, we'd love to talk.

What a special day on site! 🎉
We held a topping out ceremony for this beautiful new build in Henley-on-Thames, a tradition to mark the moment the highest beam is put in place. The whole family got involved, making it a truly memorable milestone.
A big thank you to Tim Crump at Oakwrights for supervising the hammering - we couldn't have done it without him! 🔨
At Simon Mack Architecture, we believe a home should be designed around the people who live in it, and it's moments like this that show just how much this project means to everyone involved.
2026 marks 15 years of 100% planning success in South Oxfordshire. We're incredibly proud of every home we've helped create. 🏡

The beauty is in the detail.
We've been reflecting on how much the choice of tile, its pattern, texture, and the way it holds light and shadow, shapes the emotional quality of a space. These four images from recent residential projects show just how wide that vocabulary can be.
Whether it's the handmade depth of a teal herringbone with brushed brass hardware, the graphic confidence of black-and-white encaustic-style patterning, the layered character of a grey patchwork, or the serene calm of large-format concrete-effect stone, every choice is a considered response to the client, the home, and the light.
At Simon Mack Architecture, we work closely with our clients to ensure that every material decision reflects both their personal vision and our shared commitment to beautiful, sustainable design.
We'd love to know which of these speaks to you? 👇

Thinking about building your own home? Here's something worth knowing before you start. 🏡

Before a single foundation is dug, there's a series of surveys that need to be in place, and knowing which ones you need, and when, can save you serious time and money.

From ground investigations and ecological surveys to tree assessments and snagging reports, we've put together a clear, jargon-free guide to every survey involved in building a new home.

We are thrilled to share the vision for an exciting community project that we've been involved with.

Simon Mack Architecture has been working with the Henley Community Hub charity, we have secured planning permission for the renovation and extension of Trinity Hall in Henley-on-Thames. This incredible building is set to become a vibrant hub for the whole community, home to Henley Music School, children's and youth activities, counselling support services, and much-improved shared facilities.

The two visuals here show the striking new exterior, with its warm, welcoming entrance and the breathtaking main hall envisioned as a performance space for piano concerts and musical events.

The project is now being thoroughly costed as it moves towards a major fundraising phase. We gave our time because we believe in what this space can be for Henley, and we are genuinely excited to see it brought to life.

🙏 This can only happen with community support. If you'd like to contribute to the fundraising effort, whether through a donation, sponsorship, or simply spreading the word, please get in touch with Henley Community Hub directly.

Let's make Trinity Hall everything it deserves to be. 💛

Light fittings: functional and beautiful in equal measure. 💡
At Simon Mack Architecture, we spend real time with our clients choosing fittings that do more than illuminate, they set a mood, reflect a personality, and bring a little joy to everyday life.
Here are three recent favourites: a clear glass bell pendant with an Edison filament bulb for that warm, timeless glow; a stunning gold-leaf pendant light that rewards a closer look; and a matte black adjustable ceiling spot, elegant on the outside and golden within.
Every detail matters. We'd love to hear which one catches your eye!

We're excited to share these first interior shots of a recently completed poolhouse project in Finchampstead, Wokingham Borough.
Designed as a space to relax and dine together, the interior is calm, clean, and filled with natural light. Large glazed sliding doors open the room to the grounds on both sides, while handcrafted bentwood pendant lights bring warmth and texture overhead. The long dining table seats twelve, perfect for long summer evenings with family and friends.
As the gardens come to life this spring and the newly planted natural pool matures, we'll be returning to share the exteriors in full.
For now, enjoy this quiet moment before the fun begins!

A detail worth looking at closely. This photograph shows the lead flashing work on our extension project in Finchampstead, Wokingham Borough, and it tells a story that doesn't always get told about building projects. When our contractors came to connect the new extension roof to the existing house, they encountered something that couldn't simply be moved out of the way: a mature climbing plant, well established against the wall, with branches running directly through the junction between old and new. Rather than cutting back the plant or compromising the detail, they worked around it, carefully cutting and dressing the lead soakers to follow the profile of the existing clay pantiles, forming a continuous flashing up the wall, and navigating the branches without disturbing the plant or the integrity of the weathering. The result is a junction that is fully watertight, sympathetic to the existing roof, and considerate of what was already there. It's the kind of work that takes longer, requires more skill, and will never be seen once the scaffolding comes down. That's precisely the point.

A milestone on site, and a beautiful one! We've reached the completion of the waterproofing stage of the basement on a new house we're designing in Henley-on-Thames, and these images stopped us in our tracks. Board-formed concrete, precise geometry, light cutting in through the structure, it's a look that belongs more to brutalist galleries than to a family home in Oxfordshire. And yet here we are. The finished house will be an entirely different thing: warm, considered, and tailored to the landscape and the life being lived in it. But before any of that comes this - the moment when it's just concrete and sky and possibility. We think there's a real art to appreciating a building in its rawest state. The structure doesn't lie. Every decision is visible.
More to follow as this Henley-on-Thames project continues to take shape.

🐾 Happy National Pet Day from all of us at Simon Mack Architecture, especially from Sam!
Sam is our much-loved Springer Spaniel, and one of the very best things about visiting our Henley-on-Thames studio. He has a particular talent for sitting on the best chair in the room (as you can see 😄) and never fails to put a smile on clients' faces.
Many of the families we work with have pets, and it's always a joy to design homes with them in mind, whether that's a well-placed utility room for muddy paws after a walk, a sunny window seat for a cat, or outdoor spaces that give dogs the freedom to roam.
A truly great home works for everyone who lives in it.
We'd love to hear about your pets in the comments, and if you're thinking about a home that works better for your whole family, visit us at www.simonmackarchitecture.com 🏡
