Conventional wisdom says that you should throw away your parsnip plants removed through thinning because they won't grow properly if replanted. Well, last July, instead of adding them to the compost heap, a regular client and I decided to transplant them instead, with great care not to damage their long tap roots. As a result, today, we harvested these lovely small parsnips, and about 30 more just like these. OK, they aren't as big as the ones left undisturbed, but there is nothing wrong with them and perfect for roasting whole. Just goes to show, convetional wisdom, and what you read online, isn't always right, provided you just take that extra time and care.

If you sowed broad beans in the autumn, then now is a good time to create a support structure for them if you haven't already done so. This simple bamboo support was made for a regular client this morning, and it will stop the stems from collapsing as they grow in the warmer spring weather.

Lovely way to start the working week; by planting up some spring flower pots for a regular client. The first is filled with Wallflowers (Erysimum), Veronica, Primroses and Primulas. The second with just Primroses and Primulas. A tip on your potted up primroses and primulas - don't throw them away when you come to replant your pots up for summer. Primroses and primulas are hardy perrenials, so if you replant them in a border, they'll slowly die back and regrow and flower again every spring!

Late winter is a great time to prepare your vegetable garden for the new growing season. We've been doing a spot of 'No Dig' bed prep at a regular client's garden this morning. It's a great way to use up any spare cardboard you have lying around and then you simply spread compost on top! If you want to know more check out no dig gardening.

Hydrangea cuttings at a regular client's greenhouse. These were potted on a couple of weeks ago. Hydrangea cuttings are easy to take and it's a great way to get more plants for free, especially if you already have a variety you already love and want more of.

A carpet of Cyclamen Hederifolium in full bloom at a regular client's garden last week. These fully hardy cyclamen will bloom every year in the autumn, followed by beautiful ivy-like leaves. Cyclamen Coum is also full Hardy but flowers in the early spring and often gets taken over by its hederifolium cousin. Autumn baskets and pots were also made up for this client as well. 🍁

It's been a long time since we've posted. I'll try to get better at doing this again! Early this week, we did a final produce pick and end of season clear out in a regular clients greenhouse. Nothing goes to waste and the green tomatoes will make delicious green tomato chutney.
