Fresh back from Symposium. I heard some very inspiring speakers, who shared their knowledge, experiences and values so generously.

I especially appreciated the different perspectives. Even though we were all there for our love of plants and more natural landscapes there was a good diversity of vantage points. A good mix of ecological understanding, inspirational projects, practical advice, lived experiences, lessons learned, controversy, vulnerability, and hopes and dreams for the future.

I’ve come away with much to think about on my own path as a gardener. Luckily I have .design to process it all with!

Thank you to all who made it happen. The food was sooooo good too!

Both graceful and wild. This single flowered coral pink rose opens its glowing centre of stamens that invite the insects in. Bringing fragrance, beauty and life into the scented garden where it grows at Lowther Castle and Gardens. I’ve fallen in love 🌺 I need this rose in my life.

One of my favourite gardens looking its best, just in time for a family wedding. It’s been my pride and joy to design, plant and tweak this border over the years. Couldn’t have done it without the help of some very talented and hardworking gardeners at my side.

Today is the last day to take part in the Big Butterfly Count, a nationwide citizen science survey to monitor the health of the environment. It’s a lovely and easy way to connect to nature and contribute to national data at the same time. I saw red admiral, peacock and of course the small white (known as the cabbage white). These beautiful scaled insects with their intricate markings and striking colours not only add beauty to our lives but they also are important for pollination and part of the food chain. Monitoring their numbers gives us a good indication about how healthy our environment is.
