We travelled down to Portland to collect this impressive block of Portland Limestone from the Stonehills Whitbed seam, one of the island's most respected and traditional sources of building stone.

Back in our Chiltern Hills workshop, this single block will be carefully transformed into a bespoke staircase for a beautiful home in Knightsbridge, leading down to a newly created basement.

It's always rewarding to see the journey from raw quarry block to finished installation. With the right craftsmanship, a piece of natural stone that has been in the ground for millions of years becomes a feature that will last for generations.

These photos show just a small part of the journey that natural stone takes before it arrives in a customer's home.

It begins with a block of Portland Limestone, weighing several tonnes and freshly arrived from the quarry. From there, our team carefully measures, cuts, shapes and finishes each component by hand in our Chiltern Hills workshop.

Every detail matters. Every profile, every edge and every surface is worked to ensure the finished piece is not only beautiful but built to last for generations.

A pair of rather grand Portland Limestone fireplaces, crafted from one of Britain's most iconic building stones.

For this project, we travelled down to Portland to source the stone before bringing it back to our Chiltern Hills workshop for fabrication. The finished fireplaces feature matching Portland Limestone surrounds, hearths and interior slips, creating a beautifully cohesive look throughout.

Portland Limestone has been used in some of the country's most recognisable buildings for centuries, valued for its strength, character and timeless appearance.

There’s something particularly special about taking a block of stone from the quarry and transforming it into a centrepiece that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

A lovely project we worked on in Rickmansworth using Antalya Limestone, sometimes also known as New Cream Limestone.

We supplied and installed the stone around the swimming pool along with the surrounding paving and detailing. It’s a material that works beautifully outdoors thanks to its soft light tones, natural variation, and timeless appearance.

Limestones like this have a way of making outdoor spaces feel calm, warm and established — especially in the sunlight.
