Most premium specs start with the drawer box. Onyx Black Blum, glass sides, the visible stuff. 🔧

The hidden services get left to the site.

Lighting, power, ventilation. Handled ad-hoc at second fix, worked around, compromised.

Polden was built the other way. Blum Servo Drives and their cabling run integrated and concealed inside the carcass, lighting options included. Fridge and freezer bases come pre-routed for ventilation before they leave the factory.

That's the difference between a kitchen that looks finished and one that fits clean the first time. You can see the drawer system. The integration you can't see is what the fitter feels on site.

The parts that decide your fitting time are the ones you can't see. Whether the carcass is square. Whether the drillings line up. Whether the box holds true to 0.1mm before it ever reaches site. 🔧

Barrie spent 40+ years fitting kitchens in Somerset before founding Slade, and he'll tell you the same thing: there is nothing worse than out of square cabinets or inaccurate drillings. That's the difference between a run that drops in and a run that eats your afternoon in packers and scribes.

Most contractors focus on the finish. These eight decisions are made before a door is ever fitted.

Every cabinet we build starts with the same specification arc, structural foundation first, surface detail last.

Construction method comes first. Mendip cabinets go together glued-and-dowel or cam-and-dowel, depending on the job.

Then the drawer system. Then the hinge type. Then the hinge plate choice, because the plate is where site adjustment actually happens.

Edge banding spec next. Then shelf treatment. Then foot size and grade.

Branded cover caps are last. Surface detail, decided last, for a reason 🔧

The order matters. Get the construction method wrong and no finish will save it. Get it right and everything above it holds.

Brent, Mendip, Polden and bespoke each sit at different points on these eight decisions. That's how one range suits developer volume and another suits high-end in-frame.

Two things that obsess over fractions of a millimetre: NASA, and a four-person kitchen factory off Junction 22.

One of those you'd expect.

NASA holds aerospace tolerances because a stray fraction ends a mission. We hold 0.1mm because a stray fraction means packers, planing, and a snag list on site. 🔧

Barrie Greenslade started Slade in 1985. He was a kitchen fitter in Somerset first, so he already knew what a bad box costs you on site.

Not every project needs the same hinge.

Ask one question before you spec hardware: what will the end client open and close every day for the next twenty years? A rental development answers that differently to a family home. A premium bespoke fit answers it differently again. The hardware tier follows the client expectation, not the other way around. 🔧

Brent. Contract soft-close hinges and cam-and-dowel construction. Built for volume developer work where the units get used hard and specified sensibly.

Mendip. Blumotion soft-close hinges and Minervo drawer boxes. The baseline for mid-range household kitchens built to last a lifetime.

Polden. Legrabox with Onyx Black Blumotion and glued-and-dowelled carcasses. The spec for projects where every detail is visible and every movement is judged.

At the order stage, confirm three things: hinge plate type, drawer depth, and whether the Egger board group matches the finish the client expects. All decided at the factory.

Every job sits somewhere on the spec spectrum. Here are the six ways we specify a cabinet at Slade, from site-ready developer fit to full bespoke. We have built all six. 🔧

01 Fully Assembled Contract. Our Brent range. Doors fitted, shelves in, clearly labelled for the site. Blum Contract drawer, one Blum soft-close hinge and one standard close, five Egger colours to pick from. Made for developers and high-volume plots.

02 Cam and Dowel Construction. Fast, strong, repeatable. The workhorse joint for volume work.

03 Glued and Dowel Construction. The heavier build when longevity is the brief. Both methods are available across our Mendip range, so you spec the joint to the job.

04 Blum Minervo Mid-Range. Our Mendip tier. Blumotion soft-close hinges, additional back brackets as standard, T-buffers fitted, 450 deep drawers, and three hinge plate options at no extra cost.

05 Blum Legrabox Premium. Our Polden tier. Legrabox drawers, onyx black soft-close hinges, shelves edged on all four sides, 0.8mm PVC edging all round, 450 or 500 deep drawers, glass-sided option if you want it.

06 Factory-Integrated Lighting. We route Loox5 strips straight into the 18mm panel, groove the end panels and drill long-range cable outlets so the cables disappear. Plug and play on site, 7-year guarantee.

A 40-unit development. Every cabinet arrives labelled, assembled, doors on.

That's the Brent range. Built for developers running four homes or a hundred, where cost and quality both have to add up.

Doors fitted. Shelves in. Every unit labelled for the plot it belongs to. Your crew hangs them and moves on, rather than working out at the lorry which box goes where.

The build spec is Blum Contract drawers, one Blum soft-close hinge and one standard close hinge, standard feet, and a choice of five Egger colours. All the Blum components carry a lifetime warranty.

We build it this way because Barrie spent his years fitting kitchens in Somerset before Slade ever made one. We know what a bad delivery costs a fitting crew on the morning.

The wrong cabinet supplier doesn't just cost you money. It costs you the project. 🔧

We've supplied trade businesses for 40 years, and the ones who get burned nearly always skipped the same step: they never diagnosed the manufacturer before the first order.

So here are three questions we'd ask before committing to anyone.

Can they build to your exact dimensions, not just their standard sizes? Are the cabinets delivered fully assembled, or are you paying your fitters to build boxes on site? And will they adapt when the brief changes halfway through the job, because it always does?

A supplier who hesitates on any of those is a site problem waiting to happen.

Then test before you commit. Ask for a sample cabinet and check the hinge action, the edge finish, the squareness. You'll feel the difference before a single unit reaches site. If the sample falls short, the full order will too.

Once someone passes both tests, get lead times, labelling and aftersales agreed in writing before the first delivery. Long-standing trade relationships are built on consistent service and on-time delivery, not on price alone.

Years of loyalty are earned on the first order, not the tenth . . .
