Swamp Cypress - Taxodium Distichum 'Wisley Flame'

During the late spring and summer, this tree resembles and ordinary-looking Cyprus tree. yet Taxodium is deciduous and turns to a lovely orange-red before creating a golden carpet of fronds.

As its name indicates, this tree grows well in boggy soil or, like many Salix, at the edge of a stream, or pond. A species of deciduous conifer native to the south-eastern United States, Taxodium distichum grows to be an attractive, tall, conical tree.

The pretty, soft green and fern-like leaves will turn shades of rich reddish-brown in autumn before they fall. Taxodium distichum is an eye-catching garden tree which thrives in wet conditions. Taxodium looks fantastic when planted in groups next to ponds or streams.

Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
Soil: Fertile soil. Taxodium distichum will tolerate very wet soil conditions.
Hardiness: Hardy and tolerant of wind exposure.
Rate of Growth: Moderate until established then vigorous growing to a medium-sized or eventually large tree with a conical, upright habit. Height: up to 25 m (82 ft). Allow five meters between trees. Will produce a better root system and thicker trunk if not staked.

Himalayan Cedar - Cedrus deodara

Also known as the 'Fountain Tree', Cedrus deodara's evergreen bows have a habit of drooping as if it were a deciduous tree, producing a broad crown when mature.

Happy on any soil, it wants full sun in either a sheltered or exposed site. Give it space and light, and it will grow to at least twelve meters in between fifteen and twenty-five years. Do not plant within eight meters of a building or wall due to its long and shallow root system.

Scots Pine - Pinus Sylvestris

Reach for the skies with this, fast-growing giant!
Thriving on poor, sandy soils and in low temperatures, Pinus Sylvestris is often out-competed by broad-leaved trees on rich or clay soils. However, this doesn't prevent you from adding one to your design; just ensure that it is given its own space - allow four meters all round between other trees. As it grows you can plant other, shade-tolerant shrubs below it such as Choisya or Lonicera nitida.
Prefers full sun, especially when establishing. Will grow to at least twelve meters over twenty years in ideal conditions but slower on richer soils. Plant at least eight-meters from walls or buildings and consider what it will be shading.

A dense blue fir tree from Mexico, with a wide and symmetrical habit if given space, reaching fifteen to twenty-five meters with a spread of eight to twelve meters. However, where confined, as in a forest, this fir can adapt to growing upright and tall reaching heights of up to forty meters.
Prefers, humus-rich neutral or acid soil in either an exposed or sheltered position. Do not plant within six meters of a building or wall.

Oriental Plane Tree - Platanus orientalis

Grown as a specimen tree for its interesting 'Jigsaw' bark. This medium-size tree reaching a maximum of twelve meters, with bright green maple-like leaves. Small, spine covered fruit appear briefly in October as the leaves turn to a range of reds and ambers.

Dawn Redwood - Metasequoia glyptostroboides

Originating, millions of years ago in vast forests in the Artic (When global temperatures were +5C higher than at present) Thought to be extinct with only fossil records representing the species. However surviving examples were found in 1941. Propagated but still on the endangered list, Dawn Redwood is a fine upright tree with bright foliage and rich red bark.

Maidenhair Tree - Gingo Biloba 'Fastigiata'

This large, deciduous tree, has a most unusual form and bright yellow autumn colour, making it an ideal specimen tree. Its clusters of lime green leaves are also very bright. The female trees produce yellow fruits which although it is claimed they contain many anti-oxidants, also smell strongly of vomit as they decompose. So, for this reason, I'd advise selecting a male tree if possible.
Happy in any soil, exposed or sheltered but requires full sun.

Sweet Chestnut - Castanea sativa

A slow-growing giant that adds real character to a garden. Sweet Chestnut trees were introduced from Africa by the Romans who regarded their chestnuts as a delicacy.
Growing up to fourteen meters over between twenty to forty years depending upon soil. They prefer a damp sandy loam soil to grow more quickly and are less likely to do well in clay. The bark is impressive and canopy often leans right down to the ground when heavy with fruit. Any sheltered or exposed site, not closer than ten meters from a building or wall, prefers full sun.

This Acer has it all; It is one of the tallest, growing to between eight and twelve meters in thirty to fifty years. The photographed example is thirteen meters high and one-hundred-and-twenty years old! Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum sub species amoenum

A spindly, upright Acer is coppiced young or a more substantial tree if left to its own devices. Ssp amoenum starts to turn to a range of glossy mauves and reds a little earlier than other acers, making it an ideal choice to plant amongst other varieties for a longer show. This one does need to be positioned in a sheltered spot and shaded from direct sunlight else the leaves will fall early or be blown away.
