Transforming a Subfloor: My Hands-On Experience with Caementa in Southampton
Introduction. Sometimes, a project comes along that challenges your skills in ways you didn't expect. Recently, I had the opportunity to team up with Caementa, a company who is as focused as am I on high-quality flooring solutions, to help them complete some essential prep work on a subfloor in Southampton. The floor had been laid poorly, and it needed a lot of TLC—grinding, repairs, and even self-levelling—to bring it up to standard.
What made this project even more rewarding was the opportunity to collaborate with Caementa. We share a common passion for getting things done right and to the highest possible standard—something that isn't always easy to find in this industry. In this post, I’ll take you through the process and share some of the challenges and triumphs along the way.
The ProjectThis project was about more than just fixing a few cracks in the floor—it required a complete overhaul of a subfloor that hadn’t been laid properly in the first place. The Caementa team brought me in to help get things right.
The job included:
Grinding the uneven surfaces
Repairing damaged sections
Self-levelling to make sure the surface was perfectly flat and ready for the next phase.
The location in Southampton had its own set of unique challenges, but with the right tools, a focused mindset, and a shared commitment to quality, we were able to get the job done to perfection.
The ProcessThe first step was assessing the damage. We had to carefully inspect the entire subfloor to identify the worst spots. Once we knew where the focus had to be, it was time to get to work.
Grinding: The uneven patches were tackled first, removing any high spots and smoothing the surface. This was a physically demanding process but essential for the next steps.
Repairs: After grinding, it was clear there were some areas where the damage was too severe for grinding alone. I worked with the team to patch up the cracks and imperfections.
Self-levelling: Once everything was prepped, we used self-levelling compound to ensure the surface was as flat and smooth as possible. This part of the process was key in ensuring the final flooring would sit perfectly.
The real challenge was making sure everything was level, which required a steady hand and a keen eye for detail. It’s the kind of work that may seem straightforward but demands precision to ensure it’s done right.
What I LearnedThis project was a great reminder that even seemingly simple tasks can require a lot of skill and patience. I honed my floor preparation techniques and learned how critical it is to ensure a strong foundation for any flooring project.
Collaborating with Caementa reinforced the importance of working with a team that shares your drive for excellence. Both Caementa and I are passionate about getting things done the right way, and it made all the difference in the success of this project. Their commitment to high standards was something that resonated with me, and it was inspiring to see the results of that focus.
Looking AheadThis project has made me even more passionate about the importance of quality preparation in flooring work. It’s something that often goes unnoticed, but without it, the end result is never going to be quite right.
I’m excited to take these experiences into future projects and continue honing my craft. If you’re ever tackling a flooring project, remember that the prep work is just as important as the final touches!
