Do kids still do this?

The other day I saw a picture of some kids flying down a hill in an old wagon with no brakes, no helmet, and absolutely no regard for their own safety.

It reminded me of being young.

Back when a few bits of scrap wood, an old bike wheel and a hammer could keep you entertained all summer.

Dens made from pallets.

Go-karts made from whatever you could find.

Tree swings.

Mud.

Adventure.

And usually a parent somewhere nearby pretending they didn’t know exactly what you were up to.

Nan Mary would’ve loved it.

She hated waste.

Not because things cost money.

Because she could always see what they could become.

A planter.

A bird table.

A go-kart.

A den.

A memory.

Maybe that’s why I still struggle to throw things away now.

I sometimes wonder if kids still build things like this, or if the world has changed too much.

If there are families out there still doing it, I’d genuinely love to hear about it.

Because some of the best things in life aren’t bought.

They’re built.
