🏡 Chapel Row Cottage – Restoration Update 🏡
It’s been a little while since we’ve shared an update from Chapel Row, and what a journey it has been so far.
What originally started as a refurbishment quickly evolved into a full restoration project. As we began stripping the cottage back, it became clear that significant work was needed to preserve this beautiful old building and ensure it remains fit for the future.
One of the largest undertakings has been the complete replacement of the suspended timber floor. The original floor structure was removed entirely, allowing us to inspect the building properly, uncover hidden issues and rebuild from the ground up. New treated timbers have been installed throughout, together with an anti-squeak barrier system beneath the flooring to provide a solid, durable and long-lasting structure.
As the cottage was opened up, extensive areas of original stonework were uncovered. Large sections have been carefully repaired and repointed, restoring the character of the building while strengthening the structure at the same time. Seeing the original stone walls emerge from behind decades of coverings has been one of the most rewarding parts of the project.
The kitchen has undergone perhaps the most dramatic transformation. Existing units and finishes have been completely removed, original stonework exposed and repaired, and preparations are now underway for the installation of a full waterproof tanking system to both the walls and floor. A bespoke stone fireplace feature has also been created within the kitchen, transforming what was once an ordinary wall into a striking focal point that complements the age and character of the cottage.
Outside, work has continued with improvements to the courtyard and garden areas, including the installation of new fencing and the introduction of our coastal-inspired colour scheme, chosen to complement the stone cottage and reflect its estuary setting.
A special thank you must also go to our neighbour, Gordon, who kindly sprayed both sides of the fence panels that border our garden and his. It was a huge help and has made a real difference to the finished appearance.
Our aim throughout this project has always been to preserve as much character as possible whilst sympathetically modernising the cottage for the future. Every decision has been made with that balance in mind.

Looking back through these photographs, it’s hard to believe just how much has already been achieved. What many people will eventually see as a beautiful cottage has involved months of hidden work beneath floors, behind walls and within the structure itself.
We still have a way to go, but Chapel Row is slowly being brought back to life, and we’re excited to share the next stage of the journey with you all.
