Grass is starting to grow.
The lawn feels dry enough to walk on.
You’re thinking it’s time to get the mower out.
Now make sure that first cut works for you, not against you.
The first mow of the year quietly sets the direction for the whole spring. Done properly, it encourages thicker, stronger growth. Done too aggressively, it can stress the lawn just as it’s waking up.
Here’s how to get it right:
• Check your mower blades are sharp. A clean cut heals quickly. A torn cut turns brown.
• Don’t remove more than a third of the height. Keep it slightly higher than you think.
• Expect a slightly paler look after cutting. You’re revealing fresh growth and any winter thinning. That’s normal.
• Through March, mow roughly every two weeks if growth allows. As growth strengthens, move to weekly cuts, taking only a small amount off each time.
• Apply a balanced spring fertiliser to support root strength and steady green-up.
The goal of the first cut isn’t to make it short. It’s to make it stronger.
