I want people to enjoy where they live, but I also want them to feel safe.

That balance really matters in shared residential buildings, especially during the summer.

When the evenings are longer, I know residents are more likely to use communal gardens, courtyards, balconies and entrance areas. There may be more visitors, more deliveries, more barbecues, and more people coming and going.

I do not see that as a problem. Shared spaces should be lived in and enjoyed.

What concerns me is when the security around those spaces has not kept up with how the building is actually being used. Over the years, I have seen how small issues can create bigger risks. A communal door that does not close properly. An access control system that no longer suits the building. A rear gate that everyone forgets about. CCTV that is fitted, but not covering the areas that matter most. These are the kinds of details I look for when I review shared building security.

For me, good security is not about making a building feel restricted. It is about helping residents feel comfortable using the spaces around them, while making it much harder for the wrong people to get in.

If you manage a block or shared residential building, we can help you review your summer security arrangements.

Summer Is a good time to upgrade shared building security

The summer months can be a practical time to carry out security upgrades. With more residents away on holiday, it can be an easier time to complete work with less disruption.

It is also a time when secure access matters more. Empty flats rely on strong communal security while owners and tenants are away.

As a result, managing agents may want to review:

* Communal door security
* Access control systems
* Old or missing fobs
* Shared access codes
* Door entry and intercom systems
* CCTV around entrances and shared areas

Small improvements now can help make the building more secure throughout the summer and beyond.

With more residents away, communal access matters more

During the summer, more residents are away from home for longer. In a block of flats or managed building, that can change the security picture quickly. Empty flats mean fewer people to spot suspicious activity, report unfamiliar visitors, or identify problems around communal entrances.

For managing agents and block managers, this makes summer a sensible time to review:
- Communal door security
- Access control permissions
- Old or missing key fobs
- Door entry systems
- Intercom reliability
- CCTV around entrances and shared areas

Strong access control helps protect property when residents are away, meaning everyone can enjoy summer worry-free.

Don’t Panic! Or let rogue locksmiths exploit your fears.

When you are locked out, dealing with broken access systems, or trying to secure your business or home after a break-in, it is easy to feel rushed. Security problems rarely happen at a convenient time, and pressure quickly adds up.

Unfortunately, rogue locksmiths exploit your fears. They may advertise low prices, arrive quickly, then increase the cost once they are on site. They may destroy locks and damage doors unnecessarily, fit poor-quality replacements, overcharge, and underdeliver.

For small businesses and average homeowners, the impact can go far beyond one expensive invoice. Poor locksmith work can leave your premises less secure, not more.

Before you agree to any work, remember:

- Check whether the locksmith is MLA-approved.
- Be wary of very low online prices.
- Ask for a clear explanation of the problem.
- Question whether drilling or replacement is genuinely necessary.
- Do not feel pressured into agreeing on the spot.
- Choose a trusted professional who can give independent advice.

A Master Locksmith should help you understand your options, not push you into panic buying.

If you need locksmith support, lock repairs, replacement locks, safe advice, or a wider security review, send us a message or call us 01708616411.

How do you know who to trust?

In an emergency, it is easy to choose the first locksmith you find online. But rogue locksmiths often use low prices, fake local listings, and pressure tactics to win urgent work.

Imagine getting a low quote, but then additional time and equipment costs you didn't expect.

Security Masters is an MLA-approved company, listed by the Master Locksmiths Association with Licence No: 001990.

This means we are vetted, inspected, and qualified, and have signed up to a code of conduct that prevents overcharging and surprise additions to the bill.

Don't fall for artificially low quotes. For trusted locksmith support, speak to Security Masters.

When choosing a safe, it is easy to be guided by price, size, star ratings, and online reviews.

The trouble is that none of these things will really tell you whether a safe is right for your business or home, or whether your insurance will cover any theft. It's essential that you have specific industry recognised safes and that they are installed in the right way.

This is why Security Masters offers totally independent specialist advice. Speaking to a Master Locksmith gives you a clearer route forward than online research ever could.

At Security Masters, we don't just professionally install robust, proportionate security systems. We help you pick the right equipment in the first place.

As we move into spring and summer, it is the ideal time to think ahead about property security.

Lighter evenings, increased footfall, planned works, busier sites, and holiday plans can all change how a building is used and where vulnerabilities appear. What felt secure a few months ago may not be enough for the season ahead.

For landlords, block managers, developers, and commercial property operators, this is a good time to review access control, CCTV coverage, door and gate security, perimeter protection, and site security.

A proactive upgrade now can help prevent avoidable issues later, protect people and property, and give residents, staff, and visitors greater confidence. Spring is not just a time to refresh appearances. It is a chance to strengthen the systems that keep your property secure as the year gathers pace.

Are you considering a new door entry system?

Stop! You might not need to. We specialise in refurbishing older systems that many other suppliers aren't interested in.

So before you commit to spending on a new system, it's worth talking to Security Masters. We can often provide a refurbishment rather than a replacement quote, so you can at least make an educated decision about the next steps.

For residential blocks, reliability and ease of use are key. For commercial buildings, visitor access, staff-only areas, and day-to-day management all play a part too. But, importantly, you don't always need a new system to feel secure. As a wholly independent business, Security Masters can review your access controls, locks, wiring, and intercoms to determine whether repairs offer better value for money than replacement.

Avoid CCTV blindspots

Think your office is covered? It only takes one blindspot to undermine your whole security system.

Entrances, side access points, bin stores, car parks, delivery areas, and poorly lit corners are all common weak spots. If cameras are badly positioned, outdated, or no longer aligned with how the site is used, important activity can easily go unrecorded.

Effective CCTV is not just about having cameras in place. It is about making sure they cover the right risks, in the right places, at the right quality.

Our latest blog looks at the cost of unsecured properties and why proactive security measures matter.
