Why didn’t we get you in sooner?

We’ve heard this cry from many project managers over the years, but now it is the turn of those in charge of commissioning automated warehouse systems. Once racking has been installed and the AMRs, AGVs, or ASRS systems have been commissioned, people discover they have overlooked one of the most critical elements of the build – the floor.

Often, floor tolerance problems are only recognised when automated systems begin to compensate for them. This is the stage where everyone, from the warehouse operator to the MD, knows something isn’t working quite as it should. Robots slow down, navigation corrections increase, efficiency and throughput dive, and equipment wears prematurely.

They also quickly realise that floor flatness can be one of the most expensive and disruptive issues to correct once automated systems have been installed.

This is why early floor evaluation and diagnosis are critical.

We can’t emphasise this enough - don’t treat your floor as a by-product of construction; instead, consider it an engineered component of the automation system itself. The warehouse floor must be measured, verified, and certified to meet each facility’s operational demands. As many appreciate too late, your warehouse floor’s performance plays an essential role in reliability, efficiency, and long-term ROI of automated systems.

If you are planning an automated warehouse project, make floor performance part of the conversation before construction begins.

Our floor design and testing company, Face Consultants Ltd, provides detailed floor assessments early in the project to avoid commissioning delays and long-term operational inefficiencies. If floor tolerances need correcting, they can suggest the best way forward. Long before racking and robotics are deployed.

Speak to us today about floor testing, specification, and compliance solutions for AMRs, AGVs, ASRS, and other automated/robotic operations.

It's the final day of the LogiMAT Trade Show in Stuttgart, and we've thoroughly enjoyed discussing modern warehousing with our visitors and the vital role the floor plays in supporting materials handling equipment and automated systems.

From VNA to AMRs and ASRS (and many other abbreviations!), a flat, level floor is critical for efficient and productive operations. Curious to know more? Call by stand 8G12 for a discussion.

If you don't get a chance to visit us, don't hesitate to contact James Dare, Bernd Schnoor, Bartosz Sobowiec, Paul Altham, or Pedro Palminha Ribeiro after the show. A quick conversation about your floor could be the first step toward improving your warehouse performance.

If you're attending LogiMAT this year, you're probably focused on new ideas and ways to maximise throughput, such as automation, robotics, forklifts, reach trucks, and WMS.

But there’s one critical factor that many decision-makers overlook, and it can quietly undermine every investment you make: Your warehouse floor.

It’s not the most exciting part of your operation, so it’s rarely considered. Therefore, many businesses don’t actively look for specialists in floor design, testing, or remediation. Possibly, until it’s too late.

Why Your Floor Matters:
Automation performance – AGVs, AMRs, ACRs, and ASRS systems rely on very precise floor flatness and levelness. Even small deviations can cause navigation errors, speed restrictions, or unplanned downtime.

VNA operations – In very narrow aisle (VNA) warehouses, turret trucks and wire-guided MHE depend on tight floor tolerances. Any unevenness can affect lift height stability, safety, and picking accuracy at elevation.

Free Movement floors – For operations using counterbalance trucks and pallet trucks, poor floor surface regularity leads to slower travel speeds, increased load instability, and operator fatigue.

MHE wear & maintenance – Uneven or damaged floors accelerate wear on wheels, bearings, and components across all types of materials handling equipment.

Operational efficiency – Floor defects create hidden bottlenecks that reduce efficiency and disrupt processes.

Safety & risk – Increased likelihood of product damage, equipment failure, and safety incidents.

Long-term ROI – You can invest millions in automation or racking, but if the floor isn’t right, performance and productivity will always fall short.

Your entire operation relies on the surface it runs on.

At LogiMAT, you’ll see cutting-edge technology designed to optimise logistics. But very few people will be asking whether your floor is capable of supporting that level of performance, whether it’s for automation, VNA applications, or free movement MHE.

Before committing to new systems, or if you're already seeing inefficiencies, it’s worth asking:

Has your floor been tested to the correct international standard for your operation?

Is it suitable for VNA, automation, or free movement traffic?

Could hidden floor issues be limiting your productivity?

In modern logistics, the floor isn’t just concrete; it’s a critical part of your system and your profitability.

Come and speak to the CoGri Group flooring specialists at LogiMAT and find out how we can help your warehouse operations function productively and effectively. We can be found in Hall 8, Stand 8G12.

“Data centre construction is booming — but behind every server rack and power system is something that’s often overlooked: the floor slab.”

Take a (deep) dive into the latest article from Face Consultants. Chris Linley, Associate Director, explores how data centre floor slabs support infrastructure, performance, durability, and long-term resilience.

Creating a strong, reliable foundation for all your operations is vital, but the gap between flooring expectations and reality can differ.

Are the ‘Go Faster’ stripes on your AMR telling a lie?

Of course, we are kidding. AMRs don’t have go faster stripes on them!

However, if you are planning for Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), then we’re not joking when we say that you need a floor that’s ready for dynamic, real-time navigation.

Unlike AGVs, AMRs don’t follow fixed tracks. They scan and adjust continuously, and poor flooring disrupts sensors, routes, and runtimes, leading to operator frustration and loss of warehouse productivity and profitability.

Face Consultants provides bespoke AMR floor audits to ensure your surface enhances, not limits, robot performance. So, let your AMRs operate at full potential. Start by testing what they’ll be running on.

If you are considering installing an AutoStore grid system in your warehouse, call by Stand B80 at IMHX today or tomorrow, and speak to our team about the Grid Speed Reader (GSR).

Designed and manufactured by the CoGri Group, this amazing self-propelled device accurately measures the flatness and slope of AutoStore™ grid systems to ensure they meet required standards.

As seen in the picture, it runs along the top of the grid, measuring the slope in multiple directions to 0.1mm accuracy. This allows for faster installation, on-site adjustments, and the generation of reports to prove compliance.

The GSR can also be used for troubleshooting problems, such as when AutoStore robots struggle to operate on a grid.

For anyone who isn't attending IMHX, you can see more about our GSR at: https://face-consultants.com/autostore-grid-measurement-cogri-grid-speed-reader-video/

AGVs Are Only as Reliable as the Floor They Travel On

Automated Guided Vehicles don’t just rely on predefined paths created with wires, laser guidance, or through sensors and cameras; they also rely on the floor. Uneven, cracked, or curled slabs can disrupt navigation, increase energy use, damage AGV components, and heighten the risk of accidents.

Face Consultants specialises in floor flatness testing, surface characteristics, and joint assessment diagnostics that support consistent AGV movement.

Before you roll out your AGVs, talk to us or visit https://face-consultants.com/flooring-services-g2p-automation/

Ever Wondered Why Your Warehouse Floor is Cracking? And is the cracking structural, cosmetic, or even preventable?

Our latest article, written by Tim Walker, Director of Face Consultants, New Zealand, explores the different types and causes of cracking in industrial concrete floors and what you should do next.

Whether you're managing a warehouse, overseeing construction, or maintaining a logistics centre, understanding the nature of floor cracking is essential for long-term durability, performance, and cost-efficiency.

Knowledge is the first step to better floor performance. Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/Cracking-Floors

Concrete floors in industrial or warehouse environments must meet a range of performance requirements. One of the most common concerns is cracking. Certain cracks are primarily cosmetic, while others can grow into major defects, potentially affecting durability, serviceability, or—though less freq...
