Art Organisations and Professional Bodies blog post
What are the benefits of memberships to Art Organisations and Professional Bodies? What are the differences between them? I have found they both provide benefits and help artists big and small.
Here are some of my findings for the Aberdeen Artistโs Society, Visual Artists Association.
Aberdeen Artistโs Society, formed in 1827 with the aim of this society was the mutual improvement of painting and the furtherance of art in general in Aberdeen. being re-invented over the past 192 years the society has stuck to the original aims, drawing artists from all over the country to exhibit their work through award prizing, hoping to boost new artist status. The society has a membership programme that offers opportunities for members to exhibit work and attend member-only events. There are 3 types of membership, ordinary, student and honorary. The Ordinary and Student memberships offer discounted submissions for exhibitions, 10% reduction in sales made from the exhibition and a reduction in commission on the sale of works the only difference between them is the price, the student membership being cheaper and only requires a valid student ID.
An example of a professional body that supports the visual arts is the Visual Artists Association, this body supports artists throughout all stages of their careers. The benefits include access to business services, using the best practices and being part of a wider community of artistic mentors and peers. For access to the latest professional insights, enhanced sales, opportunities, guidance, global community, and marketing tools, it is best to become a member, not only to gain these benefits but to also feel apart of a wider body. Also having support, the members can also receive training, mentoring, insurance, and advice also.
Most organisations help build those communities of likeminded individuals that can bounce ideas around one another and help build confidence. Professional bodies help promote the profession, progress the development of the individual and represents their members.
