A great start to the bat survey season 🦇 …settled, warm weather and not so many midges! So far, we’ve recorded maternity roosting for soprano pipistrelles, brown long-eared and Natterer’s bats and have seen plenty of other batty activity, as well as recording a nesting barn owl site! These two lovelies were spotted with 13 others during a dusk emergence survey yesterday evening!

…and so it begins - 2023 bat survey season in the Highlands is underway, and what a lovely start! This is from our first dusk emergence survey of the season, last week - plenty of foraging pipistrelles and emergence of a small maternity colony roosting in the barn.

A fine evening for our final bat survey of the season, last Friday! 🦇 Emergence and good activity from common and soprano pips, brown long-eared and Natterer’s bats to round things off in style!
We’ve had an interesting season - maternity roosts of brown long-eared, Natterer’s and common pipistrelle bats identified along with the usual smattering of non-maternity roosting for common and soprano pips. We’ve enjoyed the support and company of our great observer team and we’re pleased to have introduced a new member to our team towards the end of the survey season - at times it feels like we have a summer antisocial hours social life with added fabulous wildlife watching/listening, especially as we’re often too busy (or tired) to have a normal social life!

Finally a fair evening for a dusk emergence survey of this Highland church - our schedule has been impacted recently in some locations by unexpected rain dropping into the forecast after plans have been made, forcing late postponement of surveys. But we got there in the end. Nice brown long-eared and common pipistrelle maternity roosts here and lots of evil, biting midges! 🦟

Another night, another bat survey - this time a pre-dawn entry survey not to far from base! Pick up pic in Beauly at 1:20am waiting for our observers to arrive and almost first light on site…that was 3:15am!! 🥱
Batworking in the Scottish Highlands = pain & pleasure! In this case, I can’t wait for my bed 💤 (or September 😂), but what a great brown long-eared maternity roost find! 🦇

Batworking on Scotland’s north coast has its upsides…fantastic views, some fabulous sunsets and you can walk to and from your accommodation in the small hours without a torch! 🦇

A brown long-eared bat roosting in a Highland steading, snapped prior to emergence. Renovation and essential roof repair works are planned for the structure and change of use to a dwelling is proposed. There are several bat species at this site in maternity and non-maternity roosts, so mitigation will be required and a NatureScot Works Affecting Bats licence will need to be obtained prior to works. The developer is very bat friendly and keen to accommodate the roosts within the finished project…always great to know that! 🦇

Seeing & hearing the morning-has-broken blackbird is always a pleasure on the pre-dawn surveys, especially at this time of year when surveys start around 2am!! 😮 Their appearance is a marker for just another hour or so of surveying to go (then 💤)…the first blackbird was early this morning! Great habitat here - 4 bat species recorded roosting in this location during the survey period…common & soprano pipistrelles, Natterer’s & brown long-eared. 🦇

A lovely evening yesterday for a dusk emergence survey…this common pipistrelle kept me company for quite some time, happily foraging away!

Let the bat survey season commence…a dusk emergence survey view from last night’s survey. Plenty of activity - a small soprano pipistrelle maternity colony tucked into a door lintel gap, common pipistrelle roosting, an odd Daubenton’s bat and a roosting barn owl! Great start! 🦇 🦉
